RichardK Posted October 2, 2004 #1 Share Posted October 2, 2004 The Wyndham Old San Juan Hotel & Casino will become a Sheraton Hotel in the November/December time frame. Here's what I've been told by Wyndham ByRequest or through some research on my own: *I'm booked for two nights in January 2005. Told that there would be a seamless transition of my reservation/confirmation "into" Sheraton. *Sheraton is accepting reservations beginning after December 7th. *It appears that the hotel will NO LONGER operate a Casino. Look forward to hearing from people who either have additional information, or getting some post-Sheraton reviews in a couple of months. I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news??? mringenoldus Posted October 2, 2004 #2 Share Posted October 2, 2004 After walking through the lobby and casino last year, my impression wes that the hotel was dark and needed refurbishing. I know the location is awesome for those who are sailing from the pier across the street - so I would think this may be a good thing if they do the needed work. Creole Girl Posted October 13, 2004 #3 Share Posted October 13, 2004 This is good information. I booked pre-cruise through them. Maybe that is why I could not do it online. I am going to the Sheraton site to see if I can. If I can get it for a lower rate then I will cancel what I have with the cruise line. Thanks for the info and I will let you know what I find out. RichardK Posted October 13, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted October 13, 2004 Yes, please do...........We're disappointed about the Casino, if in fact, there will be none at the new Sheraton property.
Creole Girl Posted October 14, 2004 #5 Share Posted October 14, 2004 I went to the Sheraton site and I was able to book. They did have a not up about the property like you stated before about not being able to have reservations until Dec. 7. We are doing the carnival precruise and the cost is $250 pp and includes the transfers to the hotel and from hotel to pier. I thought that I was doing good because the $15 to the hotel and the $15 to the pier is around the same rate as the taxi, so I saw no difference. Well the Sheraton alone is cheaper than the Wyndham and it would come out cheaper if I booked the hotel @ $155 per night and add the $30 for taxi and come out to $185. I would save about $60 after taxes. Should I keep what I have or make the switch? __________________
imosoreal Posted October 14, 2004 #6 Share Posted October 14, 2004 I stayed at this hotel post-cruise and my opinion is that if you are paying more than $60.00 per night you are paying way too much. Maybe I just thought I was booking a 3 or 4 star when it was actually 1 or 2 star. Maybe there will be a total change after the conversion to Sheraton. I was not at all impressed. What I did like was that they secure your luggage if your room is not ready or if you're not quite ready to leave after check-out and the convenience to the shopping area and Senor Frogs. Everyone we encountered did their jobs well so there were no disappointments in the service area. Furniture was ugly and misplaced. View of the dock was nice. Bed was semi-comfortable, should be replaced real soon though. Bolt missing off of the door. Bathroom was quite nice. Casino was dirty but maybe I was accustomed to the attendants in the casino on the ship who cleaned all the time.

My understanding is that they are doing some refurbishing now. I think that it should be upgraded by the time I plan on staying in July 05. I should say that I am hoping. I had read some good things, but maybe I should re-evaluate or look around for more reviews.

They were painting the exterior and I'm sure they will have the new furniture in before your stay there. They are badly in need of new furniture right now. If I hadn't read so many reviews before I stayed there I wouldn't have been expecting so much more.

megr1125 Posted October 31, 2004 #10 Share Posted October 31, 2004 I just stayed here last Sun & Mon. They are trying to keep the remodel under wraps. When I checked in they DID NOT say the pool ws closed. A ccording to the Guest Relations manager, the GM refuses to put signs in the lobby or notify guests they are remodeling. There are BIG nice signs sitting in the hall on the 9th floor announcing a new Sheraton and "sorry about the inconvenience...." There are numerous ads in local magazines stating there is a NEW sheraton with a 7 MILLION dollar remodel. It si NOT done. If you are going in the next few weeks and can change your reservation, DO IT. The place is very dirty from all the construction, very noisy (they start before 8 AM) and the rooms are supposedly done, but there are holes in the walls where artwork was removed, chunks missing out of the stucco, the place is bad. Sheraton will have a LONG punch list of stuff to get done. I have no clue how AAA could gove the place 3 stars...it is 2 at best. Also, the Wyndham Condado is a little better but NOT 4 Diamons as AAA says...NOT if they are giving the Ritz-Carlton 4. That is like giving 4 stars to a Hampton Inn and to the Plaza in NYC. RichardK Posted November 14, 2004 Author #11 Share Posted November 14, 2004 For what it's worth>>>I received an e-mail from Sheraton stating that the property will be keeping the Casino in operation. Now with the changeover in place (last week I think), will be looking for some reviews from any who recently stayed there. Thanks.........
Rare loriva Posted November 17, 2004 #12 Share Posted November 17, 2004 Anyone out there stayed here since the changeover to Sheraton? We are booked there in early December, RichardK, so will let you know if no one else does before then.
