cruise to nowhere from NYC

Who has done this and can tell me more about it? I'm thinking to book it as a fun b-day gift for my fiancee. We live near NYC and have done cruises and love it. Is the dinner and entertainment "ok" for one evening or is it very limited?

The Dawn is a beautiful ship. The cruises to nowhere do tend to be a little crowded as everyone is trying to fit it all in, but you'll have restaurants, shows, dancing, etc. Makes a great night out if you're close enough to drive and don't have to worry about air.:)

Read the thread on this board, to get an idea of what is offered on a one-nighter. Can't really speak to the Gem question, but a nowhere cruise is fun for a night out on the town, but as a cruise experience, it is sometimes difficult to judge from less than 24 hrs on a ship. If you have been on other cruise lines for longer trips, this is only a taste of the same. The good and the bad vary by lines and ships. We have done "nowhere" cruises on several lines, RCL, Celebrity and NCL and I have to say that NCL comes in dead last in our opinion. Not meant to bash NCL, however we do have something to compare it to and have found it lacking on many levels.

If you do chose NCL, because of lack of other options, make the most of the night and it will be enjoyable.

I was too late to edit my post.:o I don't know where I got the 'Dawn' from, maybe the post before yours had something to do with the Dawn and caught my eye. Maybe my brain is just on vacation this evening.

Regardless, what I said still applies. It's a great night out. But it isn't really true indication of what NCL and freestyle is like as there is so little time to get the full benefit of a full cruise. Have fun whatever you decide.:)

The dinner and dance cruise can be fun. It's not quite like a regular cruise, more like a night on the town. People are staying up late, trying to do everything they can. The restuarants are busy all evening, the casino is packed, and the bars are busy. If you want to do a specialty restaurant, make your reservation as soon as you can after boarding. We took my mother in law and aunt with us and they really enjoyed it. They loved seeing the statue of liberty and the view of the city as we left New York. When we did it, it was a bargain compared to what dinner and a hotel room in NYC would have cost.

  • 4 months later...

I will be on the 1 night cruise to nowhere on the Norwegian Spirit on 9/13 and I was hoping you might know the answer to a question. The check-in time is listed as 1:00pm, but is that really the earliest you're allowed on the ship or did you notice if people were able to board prior to then?

Yes, you can board earlier. I think we were on about 11:30. It is a booze cruise. As soon as you are far enough out of port, they open up the Duty Free and you can buy as much as you can carry off, no limits. there were beer displays everywhere on deck. People in the hot tubs with buckets of beer by 2pm. Service was lacking...We got ice from cabin steward, but no night turn-down in cabin. Reviews of dining room service were very mixed in our group. Two table had food that was not as hot as it should have been, but we had no complaints. I don't believe it was a sellout cruise. We booked inside at $129, but several weeks later they dropped it to $89 but we couldn't get the lower price without cancelling and rebooking. EM

We did the 4/18 Dawn out of NYC - 2 night cruise to nowhere. It was very nice, except the table limits in the casino were HIGH! Also a mad rush to get reservations... we did - got both nights as we liked. Had to carry on/off the bags. It seemed a little hectic. But it was a cruise and I was on it. So it was worth it. Very fun. I still prefer the 14 day Jewel transatlantic last year, but a cruise is a cruise!!!

I should probably know this, being a crewie, but how do they get around the Jones act for these one night CTNs?

(I guess being Aussie is another excuse for my ignorance :))

I think they get around it because they return to the same port and do not travel to another port.
