Real ale - beer?

Hi we are cruising the med on the Summit in August and cannot wait.

I am partial to real ale which we can get easily in England - my question is do they serve anything like that on Celebrity - if not can anyone recommend any beers/lagers which are good and tasty that I will be able to get hold of.

Thanks

Tammy

Hi Tammy

We board the same day you disembark, doing the Venice to Barcelona trip - our first Celebrity cruise.

(incidentally, also our last, unless all the other lines change their policies as well regarding Cabin/Balcony smoking)

I will be interested to see what replies you get.

Thanks for the replies.

My husband drinks Boddingtons but I find it too watery for my tasting.

Like a drop of Guinness though - so will make do with that in between sampling cocktails of course!!!

"Real Ale"?

Not a chance.

Most of the brands are USA suds, with things like Heineken thrown in.

Sadly, most cruise lines are a wasteland for people who appreciate good beer.

Flip-top Grolsch and NBA are about as good a beer as you will get.

Expect everything to be served much too cold as well.

Hi Tammy.

My wife and I just got back from the Galaxy 3 weeks ago. I had a feeling that this question might get asked so I took a picture of the beers they had at the sky bar. The second one is a closeup.

I think they also had a "British Pub Night" one evening in rendezvous square. They had some beers on tap but I don't remember what they were. They used to have Boddingtons but I didn't see it this time.

Hope this helps.

Sadly no real ale or comparable. The nearest I could find was Boddingtons Draught Flow. Pretty good for the hot Med, but no match for Timothy Taylors:(

You are lucky if you can get Boddingtons!. I love English ales also and it is sad.

There are 14 beers in the picture (no draft pumps are evident, though it's my understanding that the beers on tap are Heineken and/or Amstel Light, in relatively large servings.

The 14 beers shown are (left to right)

1. Guinness stout (Ireland)

2. Bohemia pilsner (Mexico; 35% corn sugar)

3. Corona Extra lager (Mexico)

4. Dos Equis lager (Mexico)

5. Amstel Light lager (Netherlands)

6. Samuel Adams Boston Lager (USA)

7. Becks lager (Germany)

8. Carlsberg lager (Denmark)

9. Heineken lager (Netherlands)

10. Unknown. Can anyone identify, please?

11. Miller Lite lager (USA)

12. Red Strip lager (Jamaica)

13. Bud Light lager (USA)

14. Budweiser lager (USA)

If you didn't know where this ship had been cruising, the above list gives it away, big time.

If you sailing is out of a US port, be prepared for gassy, cheaply made lagers, in the main. Even the ones marked with origins outside the USA may well be brewed there under licence and all (including the Guinness) are brewed and exported to USA tastes...

Other beers that have been noted on other Celebrity cruises are:

Grolsch (Netherlands)

Newcastle Brown Ale (England)

Labbatt's Blue (Canada)

Michelob Light (USA)

Coors Light (USA)

Miller Lite (USA)

Boddington's pale ale (England)

Murphy's stout (Ireland)

Try different bars on board, you often find that one bar has a brand that others don't. Once the bar staff know what you want, they serve you well. I remember a cruise with a great late-night jazz jam in one bar and the barmaid quickly brought me a Grolsch every night!

Watchword here: "Low expectations".

Good luck.
