Monte Carlo- Eze

We are going to be stopping at Monte Carlo in June for a full day on our Med cruise on the Pacific Princess.

Does anyone know how far Eze is from the port? I am wondering if we can get a cab to Eze and what that might cost (for the ride, a couple hours in Eze, and the ride back to town).

The ship tour wants a lot of money for a 3.5 hour "walking tour" of Eze which includes an hour of shopping time. From what I have read- Eze deserves more time to explore and enjoy.

Any thoughts or advice?

I paraphrased the following from other posts and copied it into our itinerary:

 

"If we have some extra time, we might want to go to Eze, a little French medieval walled village that looks like a movie set on the edge of a cliff about 5 miles west of Monaco. To get to the bus for Eze, walk north through the garden across the street from the Casino to a busy street with a large Tourist Information office where you can get your passport stamped with a souvenir Monaco visa stamp. Get a schedule for the buses and then go across the street from the Tourist Info office and walk up to the next street to the bus stop to catch the next bus. There are reportedly spectacular views from the Exotic Garden in Eze…. 5 euros to tour.... the garden itself is very interesting, but the views are the highlight."

How would one get from Nice to Eze?

Getting to Eze Village from Nice or Monte Carlo is easy (and inexpensive) by bus. Take Bus #112: http://www.eze-riviera.com/emotions/deplacement/ang/bus.htm

Keep a schedule with you to plan your return trip. Also a good idea to have euro coins or small bills for the bus fare (rather than asking the driver for change for a 10 or 20 euro bill.)

 

We went from Villefranche to Eze which requires a transfer (from bus 100 to 83), but still quite easy if you have bus schedules.

We rate the old village of Eze, along the coast between Nice and Monaco, as close to Heaven and perfection as you can find on this earth. It hangs up in the mountains above the water and crowds. It's wonderful to visit. Great, great views! Totally charming! Have lunch there at one of the two great eating places and feel like you're sitting on the edge of paradise! Whether the ship tour is worth the price is hard for me to rate. THANKS to those who have given the other options for getting there! Enjoy Eze, if possible. I just wanted to give testimony that it is worth the trip! Terry in Ohio

Just another suggestion....the Exotic Garden was the highlight of our visit to Eze.... amazing views of the coast and nice plants/sculptures. Lots of cacti in the garden. It's at the very top of the village...there is a charge, but worth it if you have 45 minutes or so to spend there.

Once again I'll second SusanM about the garden--it is magical. When we were there we found that there is a discount for groups of ten (I think it was ten). There was a German tour group trying to get groups of ten together--we just joined them and saved 50%!!!

I am iffy about the buses because one in our group of 4 is disabled and can't do too much walking. So I am in hopes that we can catch a cab- does anyone know if there will be cabs at the port???

What is the best way to plan the day in Monaco and Eze? Train to Monaco and goto Eze mid-day? Also, are there different parts of Eze? What is worth seeing in each?

We decided to do Eze first as we felt it would be easier to return to Villefranche from Monte Carlo.

 

From V.F. we took bus #100 to Eze bord du Mer, then transferred to bus #83 up to Eze Village - one fare from V.F. (schedules are posted in a link above.)

 

After spending an hour and a half in Eze, we took bus #112 to Monte Carlo, spent a few hours there and headed back on the train to Villefranche. It was a great day & lots to see in both places. Our travel costs for buses and train were approx. €6 each. If you do go by bus and/or train, be sure to have schedules with you.

I suggest that you look at the links above and see what Eze looks like out of consideration of your friend with walking problems. The walking is on narrow uneven surfaces that involve hills and steps.

This is not to say that you should skip Eze, but it is something you should know. A cab will only get you to the outside of the village.

Also I think that the price for the garden has gone up to more than 5 euro, but I'm not sure.

Our ship will be stopping in Cannes and we have a full day there. 7:00 am -6pm.

 

How would we go about getting to Eze from there? It sounds wonderful and the hills and steps etc. not a problem for us. Should we first head to Monte Carlo and then get the bus from there?

 

We prefer to do things on our own if we can, what is the best way to get to Monte Carlo/Monaco from Cannes?

Monaco/Monte Carlo easy by train from Cannes. After you get off the tender, walk towards the large bandstand (turn to your right). After you pass the bandstand, turn left at next street. Walk 2-3 blocks and you'll see the train tracks; if your not right at the train station, you'll easily see it.

Most of the trip goes along the Riveria cost, which is quite overated compared to most US beach areas.

I believe there is a Eze train stop, but quite a bit of a walk from the stop.

10:37 a.m. bus #100 from Villefranche (Octroi stop)

11:10 bus #83 at Eze Bord du Mer

11:30 arrival in Eze Village

 

The only direct bus is on #112, but that travels on a higher road (middle Corniche?) and I'm not sure how you would get up there?

 

Another option is going to Nice on #100 and then taking #112 or #83 to Eze Village.

NYCeb: further to my post above, this is a map of V.F. showing bus stops. #100 runs along the lower (yellow) road, and #112 along the next one up. There is a path up to the higher road, but I imagine it's quite a hike as you are heading uphill. To get from the port to the stop for bus #100 was about a 10-15 minute walk. How do you find out for sure where you dock, I have heard Monaco and Ville Franche?

 

Has anyone been to the Villa Rothschild near Cap Ferrat? Is it worth seeing as well.

 

We have been to Nice and Monaco before.

 

We are also trying to decide between St Paul and Eze.
