TNT Posted April 3, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted April 3, 2004 Reading Terminal is a definite stop now! I've never had a cannoli, but have always heard of them. I will definitly try one. The pork sandwich will also be ordered!. We'll check out Jones' also. All my meals are paid for so we will probably eat pretty good places for lunch and a little upscale for dinner. My husband will be with me. I saw something that looked like an English/Topless bus tour. Know anything about that- looked interesting. Could get on and off at leisure. Keep the ideas coming. We'll be there for five days. bassetdaddy Posted April 3, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 3, 2004 I don't know if you watch the TV show "Iron Chef" on cable, but one of the Iron Chefs has a restaurant in Philly (723 Chestnut Street) that is exquisite. http://www.morimotorestaurant.com/main.html Had dinner there a few weeks ago on business and it is a very interesting experience if you like Asian food. krob Posted April 3, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 3, 2004 Here are a few suggestions: Upscale lunch The Palm 215-546-7256 200 S. Broad St. The Fountain at the Four Seasons Not to be missed if your expense account allows it! 215-963-1500 1 Logan Square Dinner Capital Grille (steakhouse) 215-5459588 1338 Chestnut St. Roy's (Hawaiian influence, nice atmosphere) 215-988-1814 134 S. 15th St. Sussanah Foo (Gourmet Asian - great place) 215-545-2666 1512 Walnut Street All are business casual dress except The Fountain at the Four Seasons - jackets required for men. Don't forget to sample some of Philly's favorites - cheesteaks, soft pretzals and Tastykakes The Mariott is a very nice hotel - enjoy yourself. I second the vote for a visit to The Reading Terminal for a quick meal. Any more questions - please ask - I'm in Phila. all the time.
NJGRANNY Posted April 3, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 3, 2004 You've got to try a good Philadelphia hoagie or sub - whatever they call them over there. The bread they use is terrific!
krob Posted April 3, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 3, 2004 Forgot to mention this in my previous post - if you really want to get the most out of your visit to Philadelphia, get a copy of Philadelphia Magazine at your local Barnes and Noble or Borders book store. Filled with restaurant descriptions and points of interest. If you can't find one, let me know and I'll send one to you.
H2Osign Posted April 3, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 3, 2004 If you're into history, the Constitution Center is fairly new, but getting great comments. Of course there is the Liberty Bell too. You really should check out the Art Museum and act like Rocky. Remember him running up the stairs! We also have a Rodan museum close by. There is a tour bus you can jump on and off from. You might try www.septa.com for more info on that. Restaurant reservations are sometimes difficult to come by so call soon. Have fun. BTW is that the one for Math Teachers? Until we sail again! and next up Splendor of the Seas days and counting!
TNT Posted April 3, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted April 3, 2004 Gosh!- I might have to stay longer to get all this in. Yes- it is the convention for math teachers. I must say I was a little disappointed when I found out we would be going to Philadelphia this year. The last three years have been Orlando, Las Vegas, and San Antonio. I was hoping for somewhere warm. But, I must admit- after chatting with you all and reading information I'M PRETTY EXCITED- CAN'T WAIT!!! I will look for a copy of Philadelphia magazine. Thanks so much krob. Until Navigator Majesty 2000 Majesty 2001 Voyager 2002 Majesty 3/2003 Majesty 10/2003 Navigator 2004 Enchantment 2005
krob Posted April 4, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 4, 2004 One more thing - If your visit includes the weekend and you have time, you might want to take a ride to Atlantic City. The Borgata Hotel opened this past summer and has great restaurants and a nice casino. If you go, try the Homestead Steakhouse or Ombra (Northern Italian food). Atlantic City is about an hour from Phila.

serene56 Posted April 4, 2004 #13 Share Posted April 4, 2004 Wawa for a cup of coffee. There is starbucks and dunkin donuts but the wawa makes a mean cup of coffee. (thats where you can get hoagies too. But any vendor does them cheaper down there--same with a cheese steak. (you will find them on every street corner) Anyone familiar with Bertuccis Pizza-- yum Going NOWHERE Miracle, February 13, 2005 Legend, October 22,2004 Voyager August 31,2003 Victory September 22,2002 Regal Empress,June 2001 Sensation,August 2000
megr1125 Posted April 4, 2004 #14 Share Posted April 4, 2004 I agree...Wawa coffee...YUM! Roys & Cap Grille are good, but they are chains. However, if you don;t have one where you are, by all means, try them. Hmm, AC would be good...not sure if you will have a car. Not a long drive. Not sure if NJ transit still goes there. (train/bus). There are a bunch of tours, old town trolley, Phila Ducks, (You go by alnd, then by sea in the same thing!!)-they are all good. Septa did have something called Phlash. Its purple, cheap, goes everyplace and kind of a 2-cent tour! There is also the phila zoo and across the river in NJ is the awuarium and the uss NJ battleship. There is a river link ferry that takes you over. If you like baseball, there is a brand new ballpark. You are really coming at a good time. Oh, i heard on the radio yesterday that there is a website called disceringtravler.com (not sure if i can say that!) BUT they just did a newsletter all about phila! maybe you can order a copy. have fun meg "I gotta fly to St. Somewhere....I'm close to bodily harm!" jimmy b Time left til Boat Drinks on my 1st cruise on AOS! shamrox91 Posted April 4, 2004 #16 Share Posted April 4, 2004 The Primo's hoagie in Center City is on Chestnut St, between 20th and 21st but closer to 21st. How many days are you staying and how much free time will you have? The Constitution Center should be a nice trip, it has only been open since July 4th of last year. As a previous poster said, the Phillies just opened a new ballpark yesterday and looks very nice. Not sure what type of food you like but if you want an Irish pub/restaurant atmosphere, check out Tir Na Nog on 16th St. Very nice and good food. For shopping head over to Liberty Place at 16th and Market. The shops there are nicer than the ones in the Gallery which is closer to the Marriott. Also a nice stroll would be along Walnut St. There are many restaurants and shops there and at 18th and Walnut, you'll come across Rittenhouse Square which is a nice park. They were filming a Cameron Diaz movie there yesterday, not sure how much longer the shoot will last in Philly. The movie is called "In Her Shoes" which is a book by Jennifer Weiner, a former Philadelphia Inquirer writer. If you need any other help, let me know. I live in Philly and work in Center City. firefighter75 Posted April 4, 2004 #17 Share Posted April 4, 2004 For lunch or dinner, City Tavern is a great stop. It's a recreation of the 18th century tavern that the founding fathers and continental congress used to meet after the busy work day. www.citytavern.com Navigator - 10/16/04 10/16/04 Navigator Roll Call - click here!! TNT Posted April 4, 2004 Author #18 Share Posted April 4, 2004 Thanks so much. Now we are having a problem trying to figure out how we will get all this in. We like most types of food and like trying new things. We would like to go to Atlantic City, but wasn't sure how to get there. We were hoping that there would be a tour that would take us there for the day, but haven't had any luck finding one. I bought the issue of Philadelpha yesterday. I'm reading it now! CruisinBabe Posted April 4, 2004 #19 Share Posted April 4, 2004 Altantic City is very, very easy to get to from Philadelphia. Just cross over the Ben Franklin Bridge to Rt. 42 south which runs into the Atlantic City Expressway. The AC Expressway dumps you right in the middle of all the action. If you really want to go, ask the hotel conciege (sp?) they can give you directions or info about buses going down there. Buses run to and from AC on a regular basis out of Philly. And if you do go, I recommend checking out the new Borgata. I also recommend checking out a Phillies game at the new Citizens Bank Park. You can buy tickets in advance on the Phillies website which I recommend doing because many of their games are selling out way in advance due to the new ballpark. Also - Don't forget to visit Independence Hall (it's right near the Constitution Center). And.... check out www.phillymag.com for a listing of the "best of philly" (restaurants, bars, shops, entertainment... anything you need really) Enchantment, August 2000 Enchantment, August 2002 Enchantment, January 2003 Carnival Pride, July 2003 Serenade, October 2003

pjm327 Posted April 5, 2004 #24 Share Posted April 5, 2004 Being from Philly area many years ago there is one thing I would recommend you do. You have not been to Philly till you have an original Pat's cheesesteak "wit or without". It is in South Philly not far from downtown. The website explains it all and gives you directions to the real taste of Philly.
