Visiting Victoria... where is the port/terminal?

Recommended Posts

Where is the ship (Amsterdam, July 24, 2008) going to dock in Victoria?

I would like to do some geocaching (a GPS-based hobby) while in Victoria (to get credit for another country in my search). There are lots of hides in the Victoria area according to the map, but I would like to have more information about where I will be and what is accessible in walking distance.

Thanks!

Here is a link to a very good aerial photo of Victoria's Inner Harbour. Ogden Point where the cruise ships tie up is across the harbour from the tank farm that you see in the top left corner of the photo. The Empress Hotel is red/brown building that you see in the bottom right corner and the downtown area is to the right of the Empress. To the left of the Empress is a white building which is the Royal British Columbia Museum and the buildings just above it with the copper domes are our provincial legislature buildings which is where they spend my money.

The waterways I have seen on the geocaching site have "outer harbour" and "inner harbour" marked. I see "Pendray Street," "Belleville Street," and "Government Street." Sadly, Ogden Point is not marked on their maps. I do see "Downtown" marked.

Do you have other landmarks (such as street names) that might help?

Thanks so much.

Edited to add...Putterdude, your post appeared after I entered my reply to cruiseryyc. I found the Satellite image of the harbor on the geocaching site, so I was able to find a reference point to find the ships. There are a few caches in the immediate vicinity of the ships. This is a great help! (I won't have access to the internet once I am there, and I won't have the very helpful coordinates of the dock until I arrive.)

Victoria is a Geocaching heaven. There are way more geocaches in Victoria than in Vancouver (despite Vancouver having 8x the population). To give you an idea, there are 386 caches in a 5 mile radius from the cruise terminal, and considering half of that circle is water.....

For more local Geocaching info check out http://www.vigps.com/ and if you're really adventurous, try a Team KFWB cache (aka Extreme Team)

Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that Victoria has 8 times more government workers than Vancouver?

Cheers and good night

Might be... They are always hiding something..or so it seems. :D

Wow, you're bitter about government workers. Given it's a hobby which gets you outdoors and active, I doubt it has much to do with the number of office workers,

I can't remember too many of my government co-workers geocaching, but there were a lot of varied cachers, I can remember taxi dispatchers, loggers, teachers, casino workers and retirees to just name a few, but as for govt, the only two I could think of are myself and a co-worker.
