top 10 things i dislike about the Galaxy

Although there are things i like about this ship, and cruise line, i feel like listing my dislikes. i am not saying these items apply only to the Galaxy.

Having been on the Galaxy on her 4/7/08 sailing, I thought I'd chime in about a few of these.

1. Seapass? cards get messed up (or demagmetized) easily. as a result, they may not open your door, or may just fail to work in limited applications, like the onboard computer stations.

My wife and I did not experience this problem.

2. mediocre breakfast and lunch, not on par with dinner.

I'll agree about breakfast, although I never went hungry, and I did develop a taste for muesli while onboard. Also, it was still about 10x better than NCL's breakfast buffet (NCL served hot dogs as the meat some mornings on our cruise). Lunch (on sea days) in the main dining room was excellent - we didn't eat lunch any other time so I can't comment on it, though I thought the hot dogs and hamburgers were pretty good.

3. lousy TV channel selection.

My wife mentioned this as well. I don't watch much TV while on a cruise so I can't say too much, though I did enjoy what I happened to watch for a few minutes (Family Guy, King of Queens, shore excursion channel).

4. it took too long to bring luggage from port terminal (12 noon) to room (8:00p). very short distance.

Our luggage arrived at our room in under two hours (we checked in around 1pm).

5. there is pizza and pasta until midnight, but there is no ice cream after 7:00p. i get a craving for junk food later in the evening.

There's always room service, which, during dinner hours, includes any ice creams available in the main dining room - and they are excellent.

6. the casual dining doesn't really compete with the anytime dining of other cruise lines. (if the Galaxy is trying to compete.)

I never tried the casual dining, since the main dining room was so completely fantastic that I can't imagine passing it up. Good to know that I wasn't missing anything, though.

7. as we sat on the aft of the ship, young staff members in uniform (not officer uniforms) sat nearby eating and making a lot of noise. i am sensitive to this bcz i feel they are not paying to be on the ship. they should tone it down. i more tolerate paying guests that are noisy.

I think I also remember this happening one evening - perhaps we were right near each other! I believe the staffers involved were either with the kids' program, or perhaps the spa (if we are thinking of the same people). I had a similar (though worse) incident on my recent Princess cruise, where two staffers carried on a lengthy (and LOUD) conversation in the library while I was trying to read. Very frustrating.

8. again, in aft of ship, at times, not enough bar staff to ask if we wanted a drink. they would sometimes leave to work the pool area.

I can't comment since I rarely drink. I'm always happy when those guys leave me alone, which they generally seemed to do.

9. in the buffet, at breakfast, they would keep the spoons by the oatmeal. when you got your tray, they omitted the spoon. (possibly too many spoon users.)

people kept asking where the spoons were. THEN, as the cruise progressed, at some stations, they would switch the spoon locations. (eg. you got a spoon with your other cutlery.) but this wasn't done consistently at every line. spoon havoc.

This actually was a bit irritating. My wife and I began to wonder why there was such a spoon shortage that such drastic spoon conservation methods were necessary.

10. in buffet, at breakfast, they couldn't seem to keep all boxed dry cereal stocked until end of breakfast. the same with the mixed berries. the next day, early on, everything was in supply again!!! it just gives the appearance that the managers are either cheap or lazy.

My wife mentioned this as well. I was more bothered by them running out of things entirely toward the end of the cruise (such as peanut butter, fruit yogurt, bacon, breakfast syrup, etc). I wondered if this might be due to the imminent drydock.

p.s. i would go again if i got the same good price. but right now my favs are RCL and Princess.

I will say that I LOVED Galaxy and her entire crew, and we had an absolutely incredible time. The main dining room had fantastic food, and our waiter and assistant waiter (Ahmet and Orville) were supernaturally excellent. Our fellow cruisers all seemed to be intelligent, wonderful people. We went on the Crown Princess two days later and gained an even greater appreciation for how good the Celebrity experience really is (We will only sail Princess again if we find an amazing deal). Anyway, I'll save further commentary for my review (hopefully forthcoming).

i am NOT thrilled with your passive aggressiveness. you and others with similar statements.

Come on, what did you think would happen when you post a topic titled "top 10 things I dislike about the Galaxy". You did it on purpose just to see the response. Quit trying to kid anyone. Otherwise there would be no need to post it.

. . .YOW asked me for a list of things i liked. i see my list isn't getting any comments. i feel like i wasted my time.

I'm appreciative for point #4 :) I'm too scared to even look up the prices in case DW sees what channel I'm on :D

As for the seapass cards, they tend to have problems if you rub the mag stripe against another mag stripe (another seapass, a D/L etc.)

I've always steered away from RCL because I was afraid the cereal boxes would not be organized....I am thrilled to find out otherwise and I just booked a crusie on RCL!

Yes, the cereal box organization has always been a make-or-break point for us, too!;)

We also experienced 'spoon havoc' on our recent Constellation cruise.

Why no spoon ?!? icon_smile_eat.giftantrum.gif

We're going to show our disapproval by going on Carnival for our next cruise. We are, however, forgiving enough to have booked Celebrity Solstice for the following cruise. wink3.gif

I giggled when I read John's complaint #3 re the poor tv selection. But then laughed out loud when I read he enjoyed the porn movies in his other list.

Just struck me funny. Of all the things I could remember, pro or con about a cruise, I guess the tv channels and porn would not even come to mind. Everyone to their own. ;)

We have had spoontacular cruises on Celebrity.

While I can't say that porn plays any role in my enjoyment of a cruise, I also feel that the TV offerings on X are ABYSMAL and that negatively impacts my experience with them. It is obviously not a deal-breaker, or I never would have sailed the line after my first trip with them, but it is something I would certainly like to see them improve...

Love X, but agree that the TV selection is truly awful. Not a huge deal, but still irritating. This is especially true if you want to watch the nice LCD TVs in the gym while working out. During a workout, you are forced to watch one of the same two episodes of either Andy Griffith or the Beverly Hillbillies that are shown over and over (and over).

I understand that cost cutting is widespread, but wouldn't it be possible to show 6-7 episodes of Andy Griffith?

The TV selection is particularly galling in light of the money X is spending to put high quality TVs in the cabins.

X is a premium line, right? I'll bet they could even throw in a half dozen episodes of "Murder She Wrote" and half a season of "Rhoda"... :p

I thought the televisions were just to inform us of time changes :) I thought it was great to return to our room in the evening and find the television turned on to the announcement of time changes.

No way am I going to pay thousands of dollars to watch tv!

I have the TV on when I go to bed. I have the TV on when I'm getting ready in the morning. I do that at home, and I see no reason not to do it when I'm on vacation. I'm not going to miss out on other activities by choosing to stay in my stateroom and watch TV, but I think that watching a little bit while aboard is very different from paying "thousands of dollars to watch tv"... Besides, with cruising, we all pay a portion of our thousands of dollars towards products or activities we don't choose to avail ourselves of. In your words, I don't choose to pay thousands of dollars to dance or to see comediens or to play trivia games or to eat meat. That doesn't mean that the cruise lines shouldn't provide these things because others DO enjoy them...

I suppose the picture quality would be better, but I'm not sure I could stand any more Jessica Fletcher. She's on TV even more than Columbo here;)
