Around there is Schönberg with the Steam-Train-Museum which runs on certain days the trains. Therefore you'll need a car. But it's driving like in Maine. Subject your ship calls Ostseekai: the AVIS-location is about 10 minutes walk from the cruise-terminal apart. Some impressions from Kiel: The train station is about 20 minutes walking apart from Ostseekai. Subject you are lucky that your ship will call Norwegenkai you are just opposite of the train station. Rare tonyl1956 Posted May 5, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 5, 2008 If you happen to be in Kiel at the time of the regatta (Kieler Woche, 21-29 June this year), it's much more interesting than the other posters note. The whole place is buzzing, with funfairs, concerts, bars, etc. Apart from that, I seem to remember from my business trips there that the shops were pretty good. However, if you are coming from the UK or USA, the goods will be a lot more expensive than last year, due to the strength of the Euro against sterling and the dollar. First some actual impressions from Kiel: The night before at Kiel Castle: The next morning: Some interesting places to visit: In the city of Kiel (all walkable distance from cruise terminal Ostseekai): Sophienhof Shopping Center Sparkassen-Arena (former Ostseehalle) Kiel Opera Port of Kiel City Museum St. Niklas Church If you are willing to drive: AVIS is at the Port Authority Building with the red roof of last picture ENTERPRISE is next to Train Station / left part of the last picture EUROPCAR is 7 minutes walk from the Train Station but accept to deliver to Ostseekai ... then you can also see in Kiel area: Plön Palace Sea Resort of Hohwacht Sea Resort of Schwedeneck Lake of Lank Eutin Palace Historic Farm House Altenhof Plön Lake Preetz Monastry Historic Farm House Emkendorf Keller Lake Panker Palace Most of the links are in German. For one idea please see http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1963750 If you are interested in shipping and the workings of the Kiel Canal locks, with bus number 11 you can reach the Schleusenstraße where there is a public viewing platform. A free ferry runs continuously across the canal. Near the ferry landing on the opposite side is the Schleusenmuseum (Locks Museum) with the locks, and the Tiessenkai. A short walk away is the Kiel-Holtenau Lighthouse overlooking the fijord, which is not only of historical significance but also a favourite place for weddings.
