Pacific Sun broken down in Moreton Bay

Recommended Posts

We also saw the story on Channel 9. We disembarked from the Pacific Sun this morning after being on her for 14 days. We boarded in Sydney on 19th April.

During the cruise we all noticed a shudder (we sometimes called it a 'shimmy') running through the ship. This was not apparent in the first several days of the cruise. When the shudder started it was like deja vu for us because we had experienced a similar shudder on the Pacific Star last September. This shudder on the Sun became more pronounced and more frequent as the cruise progressed. When we were cruising at slow speed it was not as bad.

Everyone on board would have noticed this shudder, and the Cruise Director Demo even made a couple of remarks about it when a particularly bad shudder happened while he was on stage. "Speed bumps" was one of the comments.

We all feel sad that this has happened to the Pacific Sun that we had such a great time on. We hope they can sort the problem out quickly and that the passengers still have a great cruise. Unfortunately, it is not good PR for P & O after the problems they had with the Star. :):)

Just checked the cruise cam and it seems to be moving again - it is hard to tell at the moment given it is night, but I think it has moved :) *crosses fingers*

We are supposed to be going on the Sun on 10 May, so hopefully it is nothing too bad and it has no more troubles for a very long time (at least 14 days of trouble free sailing would be fantastic)

Feel really sorry for the people on the ship at the moment, as they'll be feeling like they paid a lot of money just for a trip to Moreton :)

100 or so years ago convict ships sat out off Morton Bay, when they were refused to enter to offload convicts to the prison. I know which ship I would rather be stuck on out there:p

I hope they get the problem fixed, properly, and it doesnt continue to break down like all the other P&O ships, until they decide to sell it.

The shudder seemed to start on the Cherry Blossom cruise following a full speed dash to Rabaul to get medical help for a critically ill passenger.

I reckon the shaft bearings have gone.

The new itinerary will probably say "scenic cruising"

Could she be returning to Brisbane? There are plenty of lights ahead, so she is certainly not heading for Noumea yet.

Ummmm, Errrrr - Sorry, not the same couple. :p

My DW's name is Barbara. Nice to see more cruisers from this past cruise on Cruise Critic now. Our roll call was a bit lonely at times last year.

Sorry, for our first sitting in Marquis we had a table for 4 for DW, DD and myself.

Brisbane Ports has finally listed the Pacific Sun departure as complete at 12:25am, and she is at sea.

Being around 9hrs late will make it unlikely to make Noumea at a normal time. Hope everything else works out smoothly.

I think it is unlikely the Pacific Sun will call into Noumea at all. We all know that, to reach Noumea on schedule at 2pm, there have to be no adverse currents etc. Twelve days ago we were two hours late arriving, and that is not uncommon. With the ship 9 hours behind schedule they would have to go at top speed, and even then they would not get there until night. My prediction is - Noumea off the itinerary, and an on-board credit for everyone. Hope they all have a great cruise, despite this bad start.:)

ABC Brisbane News:

A cruise ship has run into trouble just hours after leaving port in Brisbane this afternoon.

P&O's Pacific Sun was forced to drop anchor just off Moreton Island after experiencing engine troubles.

Police say the ship has not asked for water police assistance and is anchored in a safe passage while it assess its problems.

The Pacific Sun left port just after 3:00pm AEST bound for Noumea.

My sis and law and bro in law are on board and rang at about 8 last night to say that they had been told that it was a cracked head and that it would be at least another 3-4 hours so looks like that they must have fixed it and are now on the go. Havent heard anything else so presume they are now out of mobile range.

We were in Regency for dinner table for 10 but only 8 were seated, so not even in the same dining room lol.

Were you on deck for Island night ??? you may remember my husband (everyone else seems to) he was rather intoxicated, having a wonderful little party, would'nt have mattered if anyone else was there or not, he had the reggae beanie with dreadlocks, sunglasses no shirt grass skirt, lae etc:eek: Used to be in the smoking area of the casino quite often..(I don't smoke yuk). Hope you both enjoyed the cruise as much as we did.

I am soooo glad that Pacific Sun is on it's way, what a letdown for passengers especially 1st timers.

We sail 24 May, 2 cruises b2b, it's my birthday and on the same day my daughters 21st, the cruises are her 21st birthday present. (We took her to Thailand for her 18th not a cruise though) it's her 1st cruise so fingers crossed they iron out the bugs before then.:p

OK, I defintely met Greg on Island Night then. We had a bit of a dance - loved that beanie. I was wearing a specially acquired Safari Suit for the occasion.

I hope all the Pacsun problems are sorted and you get all of your upcoming cruise.

We have sailed on the Pacific Sun previously - 10 days last December and 14 days in Feb/March this year. On neither cruise did we feel a significant shudder. I think you were on the Brisbane-Sydney 2 day cruise at the end of our 14 day trip. Any slight shudder then was nothing compared with recent events.

The shudder we experienced on our recent cruise was very pronounced and our group of seven all agreed that it became worse and more frequent during the 14 days. It was so bad that people would pause in their conversation and look at each other, waiting to see what would happen next.

It didn't interfere with having a good time.:)

Channel 7 Brisbane, on the ball as ever, featured this on tonight's (Sunday night) news, under the headling "Trouble plagued P&O has more problems". It showed footage of a ship in the dark which may or may not have been Pacific Sun and provided little information, other than to say that P&O had no information whether the cruises itenarary would be affected by the delay.

Looks like they may be missing Noumea:rolleyes:. The webcam is now showing next port as Lifou, last port as Brisbane.

Oh well - hope they got a generous OBC to compensate!!!!:cool:
