Man overboard?

That is horrible.

I do have one question though, and it is not meant to be a bash, but how does one fall overboard? (I have not yet cruised, but it seems to me railings and such would be constructed in such a way that it would take effort on one's part to fall overboard???????)

I hope that they find her alive and soon!

CH 2 CBS News at 5 (NY)

"Bride to be overboard.... coming up at 5"

There is a couple who are engaged to married msising off the coast of California. I think their boat washed ashore without them.......just can't keep track of all these mishaps at sea..............

I wonder the same thing I've Cruised 9 times before I can see if someone pushes another, or too much drinking..or someone is just a bit clumsy...or someone just does something stupid. But it's pretty safe.

IMO it's virtually impossible to fall overboard unless something else is involved (e.g., being pushed, committing suicide, alcohol-related stunt, etc.).

Of course finding this passenger is the most important thing.. but looking at the internary got me thinking about another cruise related question.

The internary has this cruise taking two days to get down there but one day to get back. Does the ship steam that much faster on the way back? Does the gulf stream help/hurt it that much?

My guess it the ship also gets there hours before the 8am time they can get off in bermuda. They comments from NCL seem to imply the ship will get their own time but they appreared to have searched for a while. I am glad they searched or at least stuck around until the coast guard got there. but can they really get their in time to keep on schedule?

No, it really dosen't take longer to get there, it's just that it can't dock where it needs to a day earlier. Someone else is probably there and being that the larger ships can no longer go into Hamilton, they have to take turns docking at the Dockyards. It only takes one full day down and one full day back (that does not include the day you leave from here or return on). I'm sure that extra day at sea dosen't hurt the casinos or bar service either.

I don't think it's even possible to be "pushed" overboard. Not in a normal pushing fashion. I'm trying to make those that have never cruised before feel more confortable about this! :)

Railings are up to my chest and I'm 5'4. There is no way that someone coming by me and giving me a push are going to send me over. In order for someone to go overboard they have to either jump, or climb up on the railings, or someone would have to pick them up and toss them over.

I think it is a testament to the safety of modern cruise ships that even when the Crown Princess listed so severely in 7/2006 NO ONE fell overboard. You're right -- it takes effort (and possibly a great measure of stupidity) to fall overboard.

I read on the "Man Overboard" thread on this forum that the woman was climbing from one balcony to the next balcony. That is something noone should ever do as it is extremely dangerous. The ship railings keep us very safe and I don't have any qualms at all to stand at the railings anywhere on the ship, gazing at the views.

This really is sad, I figure it would have to be hard to fall overboard though. I've been on many cruises, and it would be pretty hard to fall by accident. Hope it all turns out ok this is tragic!

I'm guessing if she was going from one balcany to another, it would just as easy (and definitely safer to just use the doors and go next door. This sounds crazy to me...

So if they saw her go overboard, and immediately contacted authorities, why hasn't she been found?? You would think that prompt reporting would enable to save her right then and there?? (please remember, I haven't cruised yet.....so if I sound ignorant, it is because I still am. )

Here's an article explaining just how hard it is to fall overboard:

IF it's true that she was going from one balcony to the other, yes it would be safer to use the door so something else had to be involved.:(

The seas were very rough last night which would be difficult for a strong swimmer. Even if they started looking for her right away, it would be a challenge to find her since it was dark.

One of my colleagues parents are on this cruise. They reported that a girl was trying to climb from one balcony to another and fell overboard. She has not been found.

CAN YOU SPELL STUPID?

I will bet that all the lib media will talk about is that she fell and try to give the cruise biz a black eye.

I am sorry for her family and those that love and care about her. I am sorry for those that have their cruise disrupted and those that share is the shock of such a tragedy.

i am sorry for her for being stupid - but there is no law against being stupid - sad.

I am sorry for the rescuers that risked their lives to try to find and rescue her.

But there is such a thing as personal responsibility and IF it was possible maybe her companions could have stopped her. I have seen companions laugh at people doing really stupid things when they were "out of sorts". IMO this encourages them instead to stopping them.

GOD BLESS THOSE LEFT BEHIND.

Why would anyone want to try to climb from one balcony to another?

I really think we need to verify this. Not sure who said they heard it or from whom. I would hate to accuse this women of being stupid if it wasn't her fault. (athough how can you really fall off a ship...climibng on ralilngs and slipped, climb to other balconies, ship lists, giant wave threw you off balance while leaning over railing, you jumped, someone threw /pushed you off) Until we know, we shouldn't judge. Let's just pray someone find her body so she can have a proper burial.

Yep.. either someone was very stupid or very evil...

If, indeed, she had fallen going from one balcony to another, she would have likely fell straight down. And, then, probably been swept under the ship. The ship was moving so that could easily happen. It's likely they won't find her at all.

My prayers go out to her family.
