jaycor Posted May 15, 2008 #1 Share Posted May 15, 2008 Hi We are taking our 20 year old daughter on a cruise next year We are from Canada so here she can have a drink at age 19. We know that she is not allowed to drink on the ship -which is fine-but we are wondering if she is allowed in the casino or any of the other adult areas with us. thanks

She won't be able to drink onboard, though.

AGE IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER OR MABEY WHAT THE PARENT WILL ALLOW. jUST DO NOT FALL OVERBOARD. I saw a kid on my last cruise aboard the Galaxy gambling at his own slot machine...the mother was next to him, I assume. He appeared to be about 12 years old...but he was playing right out in the open, main aisle into the casino. He was there the entire time I was there. When I was on the Empress of Seas with Royal Carib, I saw a bunch of kids almost every night in the casino playing slots. Some of them were little, like I would guess 8 years old or so. I was surpised it didnt seem to be enforced at all. No big deal to me, it didnt affect me in any way, it was just weird to be gambling next to a kid in a casino, thats all. :)
dkjretired Posted May 15, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 15, 2008 Then they hit a jackpot and the casino rightfully refuses to pay them...
kitty9 Posted May 15, 2008 #6 Share Posted May 15, 2008 Whenever I've been in an X casino, and believe me I'm in there a lot, I've always seen the casino staff kick kids out. A few times there's been a parent with an infant in a stroller, and they were asked to leave and come back without the child.

A few times there's been a parent with an infant in a stroller, and they were asked to leave and come back without the child. I have seen the casinos on ships kick kids out also and on land it is a regular thing since they get hit with some pretty stiff penalties for kids gambling. I have seen in the newspapers, casinos get fines over $100,000 in Atlantic City.
kitty9 Posted May 15, 2008 #8 Share Posted May 15, 2008 dkj, we used to stay at Circus in LV and it seemed that they didn't have to obey the age rules as that casino was full of kids, mostly toddlers and younger. Now, we stay at Bellagio, and nary a child in sight, anywhere. You're right, the fines to the land based casinos is very high, but since there's virtually no regulation on ships, anything can happen. But I have seen X enforce the age rule.

In AC they can't step into the casino at all and it is very strictly enforced. On the ships, it is hit and miss like the rest of Celebrity's policies. Your right....I missed that point. In many places in Canada such as where I live the legal age is 18. Odd, because some countries can send their young adults to fight a war yet not allow them to have a drink???!

Your right, it is odd and the age old question however in the US it has to do with the various states not wanting to lose federal transportation funding if they don't have drinking age at 21 due to the DWI problem. cruisequeen10 Posted May 16, 2008 #16 Share Posted May 16, 2008 On the wine cruise my niece and I took last Nov, my niece was only 19 and we had asked if she was allowed in the Casino and they said yes. Of course we had to have it confirmed with 3 people, because they were not aware of the age limit.
spearmint Posted May 16, 2008 #17 Share Posted May 16, 2008 I assume that your daughter at home can have drinks if she wishes. Unless she looks like a child, there should be no reason why she cannot order and receive a drink if she wishes. I doubt if anyone will ask for identification. Have a great time! That would only apply if someone else were buying the drinks. Your room card is basically age coded so they know how old you are and that must be presented to make a purchase. I agree with you I have a good freind who lives in Barrie Ontario who we cruise with and we agree that if you can fight for your country you should be able partake in all adult activities since you are laying your life on the line. I will not state my political feelings since they will get me in trouble and probably get me thrown off the these boards.
cruisequeen10 Posted May 17, 2008 #20 Share Posted May 17, 2008 The children's or under age 21 card is blue. The rest are grey. Everyone on our cruise was asking why my niece's card was different than the rest.

I actually wondered about that when I made my original response, and I thought that if I were in error, then someone would correct me. :)
MEcruzr Posted May 18, 2008 #22 Share Posted May 18, 2008 I had my 18 yo (just a few weeks shy of turning 19) with me in February... he was allowed in the casino and could play the slots and other electronic gambling games (poker) but he was not allowed to play at any of the tables (I think you have to be 21 to do those). He was "carded" every time he entered the casino because he looks younger than 18. One time they were going to send him back to his cabin for "proof" of his age but his g'mother pointed out that his cruise card wasn't blue and that they could look up his age if they didn't believe him. LOL As far as being served alcohol... he once ordered a "virgin" drink but it came regular. Go figure. Try to follow the rules and look what happens. I let him drink it. So shoot me. ;)
tradogna Posted May 19, 2008 #23 Share Posted May 19, 2008 Just got off the Mercury a few weeks ago. My grandson 19 was allowed in the casino and play all the machines with me. He also played at the tables with his Mom once or twice.
