Jacky4 Posted May 20, 2008 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2008 I can't seem to find a straight answer to this question anywhere. How does Carnival calculate the tax on a cruise? On our 2009, 6 day cruise it looks like the tax is 19% of the cruise cost but on our 2008, 5 day cruise it was only 11%. Does anyone know how this is calculated?
BigDfromTN Posted May 20, 2008 #2 Share Posted May 20, 2008 Not sure, but , I think it depends on the port you go out of.
Flip2cruise Posted May 20, 2008 #3 Share Posted May 20, 2008 You will never be able to figure it out. They add in fees paid to different ports, fees paid for use of pilot boats..etc. It not a % and yes it depends on the ports you visit and sail from. This might explain it a little better PORT TAXES AND FEES These are the taxes and fees charged by the various government and port authorities at the ports where your ship calls, the cruise line passes these fees along to the passengers. These typically cover the cost of docking and use of the port facilities; "parking fees" for your ship if you will. And certain government authorities impose a "head tax" on cruise passengers, which is used to maintain and improve the ports infrastructure. Port taxes are based upon what each port charged Carnival to dock and service the ship while it's in port. The price will vary widely depending upon which ports your ship is calling on. firefly333 Posted May 20, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 20, 2008 Port fees are included in the price that shows for your cruise on all cruise sites these days. Taxes and fees which are added on (which do NOT include any port fees) are the same no matter which cabin you choose. Therefore, the percentage of course varies. If you choose a cheap 1A the percentage will be higher than if you book a balcony.
