Karencruiser43 Posted June 9, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 9, 2008 Does anybody know if inoculations are required for Western Caribbean/GC cozumel/labadee/jamaica? If not, do you think they would be required for a 1 year old. Thanks for any help. Leaving in 6 weeks.
AllieInMD Posted June 9, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 9, 2008 They are not required for adults. The person to ask about the infant is their pediatrician - they can consult with a specialist to find out about an infants immunities to things you are likely to run into. It's been a long time since I had an infant around - they delayed my oldest's inoculations because she was premature. They may want to accelerate some of the child's shots Does anybody know if inoculations are required for Western Caribbean/GC cozumel/labadee/jamaica? cb at sea Posted June 9, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 9, 2008 NO--unless you have some medical condition that you would need innoculations. You will spend such a short amount of time, in relatively "civilized" areas, that vaccinations are NOT needed. If you were to camp for several days in the "jungles" of these places, then you may want to have some protection. But, you'll be on these islands less than 8 hours---you don't need a thing. MattInFLL Posted June 9, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 9, 2008 The Centers for Disease Control maintains all the info you need. http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/contentVaccinations.aspx None of the stops on your trip require anything, but you might want to check with your pediatrician to be sure there is nothing preventative he wants to do for your infant. I'm not sure if it is still the case, but it used to be if you visited Haiti (Labadee) you were not allowed to give blood for a year, because of risks - but those risks were really minor. A couple of years back I went to South Africa and Zimbabwe, which only required Yellow Fever proof.. but I decided to re-up all my vaccinations - like tetanus... and also got the Hep A and Hep B vaccines. It never hurts to be protected. And we had to carry Malaria medication. But a trip to the Western Caribbean is nothing to worry about.
