VikkiGarcia Posted June 26, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 26, 2008 I seem to remember reading that if you had a rental car you could go to a less crowded area to view the glacier? Are there any trails to the glacier from other than the visitors center? If you had a car for the day do you still recommend going to the visitors center or is there somewhere else to get a different view of Mendenhall? Thanks for your insight!!! mmmmm Posted June 27, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 27, 2008 I only saw one place (near the visitor center) where trails led from, but that doesn't mean there isn't something else. We took the very short trail to the point where you see the glacier and also walked out to the waterfall, which was a highlight. Originally we only had an hour, but I'm glad we finagled for 1 1/2 hours so we could do the waterfall. We still missed the visitor center.

The other, uncrowded place is the West Glacier Trail - http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/districts/mendenhall/trails.html
tee_harbor Posted June 28, 2008 #6 Share Posted June 28, 2008 Take Montana Creek Road to Skaters' Cabin. If the water level isn't too high--as the glacier melts in the summer, the water rises--you can walk along the shoreline and get some different views of the glacier and waterfall than you do from the visitors' center. West Glacier trail is great, but it's a commitment of time and has some steep/slippery sections.

I want to do the trails on my own also, since I will not have enought tome and $$$ to do the Helicopter landing on the Glacier. - Any other recommendations/tips/suggestions for the Glacier trails - If you do the Glacier and city tour, can you stay longer at the Glacier and then take the other bus ($6:00) back into town???
