Going Coastal Posted July 5, 2008 #1 Share Posted July 5, 2008 In the summer of 1980, I took my first cruise with my mother to Alaska, on a ship called the Calypso. Some of you are so in the know about these old ships, I would appreciate any info. We sailed from Vancouver. Thanks so much.
Rare Essiesmom Posted July 6, 2008 #2 Share Posted July 6, 2008 My first source when looking for an old ship is this: http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/ Type in the name of the ship and see if anything that comes up looks like your ship (as you remember her). I don't see one that speaks of cruising Alaska, but it might be possible. EM

cable Posted July 10, 2008 #4 Share Posted July 10, 2008 There is a ton of information out there on this famous ship. Calypso began life as the Southern Cross which was one of the first passenger vessels to have an aft mounted funnel such as modern cruise ships to increase passenger space. Shortly after your sailing, Calypso became "Azur Seas", then OceanBreeze during the 1990's. When Imperial Majesty replaced Oceanbreeze with the more efficient Regal Empress a few years ago, Oceanbreeze was scrapped in Bangladesh. http://www.maritimematters.com/oceanbreeze1.html

Going Coastal Posted July 15, 2008 Author #6 Share Posted July 15, 2008 Yesterday I could not get through to your extensive reference but have thoroughly enjoyed it since. What a great history and wonderful pictures. It was a grand start to cruising for me. Thanks again, Cable and Essiemom. Now I can better use the Simplon site.
