Alaska_or_bust Posted August 8, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 8, 2008 For those of you who have sailed to Alaska, are you able to exchange American currency for Canadian currency aboard the ship? My credit card charges $6 for each transaction made in Canada, so I would like to pay cash while in Victoria. I didn't know if I needed to get Canadian currency before I leave on vacation or if I could do it on the Pearl.
yogimax Posted August 8, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 8, 2008 American currency is widely accepted in Canada. No need to change on the ship.

jla418 Posted August 8, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 8, 2008 Our bank has a deal with a bank in Canada, so we were able to take money out of the ATM without any charges. Check your bank to see if they have such a deal, and then locate the ATMs online before you get there. This would be much cheaper than changing on the ship. Capital One credit cards do not have extra fees for international transactions. You may want to look into getting one of those.
Been There, Planning That Posted August 8, 2008 #6 Share Posted August 8, 2008 As our dollar again falls against the US dollar, you can bet your dollar will be widely accepted. The problem is that you may not get the best rate in commercial establishments. For a brief moment a few months ago our money was at par, but it's slipping rapidly. And our cruise will be paid in US dollars this time. We gambled and lost on this one.
