Aplmac Posted August 17, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2008 Seeing as some interest is being shown in our boardwalk along rocky portions of the South Coast I thought I'd start a whole new thread full of lovely construction photos just to turn you on. And inform you, at the same time...so here goes! These pics were taken immediately behind the Hastings outlet of Kentucky Fried Chicken for those of you who know where that is... For those of you who don't - just follow your nose upwind until you hit the spot! :D
Aplmac Posted August 17, 2008 Author #2 Share Posted August 17, 2008 Here are a few more, taken from another site about 400 yards to the West of where the first lot were taken ..right where the project office is located, at Hastings Rocks -the promenade with the bandstand? ______________________________________________ Aren't these the cutest 'construction shots' you ever saw?

At the Western extreme of the new boardwalk, this... is the view ..as you continue Westwards along Hastings Beach past Coconut Court Hotel, in the direction of HILTON on Needham's Point -about a mile distant from this spot. . welove2cruise232 Posted January 5, 2009 #5 Share Posted January 5, 2009 Great photos! Can you tell me where the new boardwalk starts and ends? Have been to Barbados a few times, but didn't get around much... We are planning to go to Rockley/Accra beach when we're in Barbados later this month. Aplmac Posted January 5, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted January 5, 2009 Great photos! ===> Thank you.Can you tell me where the new boardwalk starts and ends? We are planning to go to Rockley/Accra beach when we're in Barbados later this month. The recently-completed South Coast boardwalkstarts at the Western(sunset) end of Rockley Beach/"Accra"....just West of Accra hotel and runs Westward to...just short of Coconut Court Hotel in the Hastings area It ends at the Eastern end of Hastings Beach, which is 'Coconut Court beach' as you might know it.. -and you'll find these scenes along its way! . Aplmac Posted January 9, 2009 Author #9 Share Posted January 9, 2009 The new boardwalk looks absolutely amazing! I can't wait to see it and walk it for myself! Thanks, aplmac!! It has become very popular with locals and tourists alike! My wife has 'taken to it', and now does her afternoon exercise walk/jog-thing on the boardwalk along with many friends - Join the club! tiggerman101 Posted January 9, 2009 #10 Share Posted January 9, 2009 Here I was debating my beach day in Barbados for the past few weeks. Then I realized this new boardwalk starts at Accra/Rockley Beach. SOLD My partner is going to love this. As I said I have read through just about every thread on this board and I thank you Aplmac for all your insights. You have been a tremendous help (well kind of a detriment since you made me want to go everywhere!) ;).
tiggerman101 Posted January 9, 2009 #11 Share Posted January 9, 2009 Oh, one question, are there lockers to rent at Accra? I know we will want to stroll the entire boardwalk and back and I would rather not carry our bags.
Aplmac Posted January 25, 2009 Author #12 Share Posted January 25, 2009 Oh, one question, are there lockers to rent at Accra? I know we will want to stroll the entire boardwalk and back and I would rather not carry our bags. Sorry no lockers (that I know of) at Accra/Rockley Beachbut honestly, the place is 'cool' enough that, if you've rented a chair and an umbrella and have set up camp there you could safely leave your stuff under your chair and enjoy your stroll along the boardwalk! It's about half-hour to the end of the boardwalk -and back so you won't be away from your stuff for long. For the walk, I'd definitely take with you valuable stuff like your money/wallet, camera(natch!) - and your ship-card of course, but bulky stuff like towels and shiirt...just leave it there! Now and again local Policemen are to be seen patrolling the beach looking quite odd in their street uniforms, amongst the babes in bikinis :D I wouldn't worry too much about it, honestly! __________________________ This brolly shot looks Westward in the direction of where the boardwalk starts, at that end of the beach
Aplmac Posted January 25, 2009 Author #13 Share Posted January 25, 2009 Now it's been open for a month or so the new South Coast Boardwalk has become a big hit with tourists and locals alike! It's The Place for the local South Coast crowd to 'do the daily' as they brisk-walk up and down its length, some of them taking pictures as they go Hey...there's a new special-interest Group on Facebook for those who enjoy the boardwalk so if you're already on Facebook, you might wander over to http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=46787187730 and check out the many photos that have been posted to the group. We hope you'll join the group to help keep alive fond memories on the island -and perhaps you'll post your pics as well, huh?
thatbloominplace Posted January 25, 2009 #14 Share Posted January 25, 2009 thanks for the great photos, aplmac. if we were standing looking at the beach at accra (across from cheffette) i assume we would go to the right to find the boardwalk. how far is it from this point and do we access it by simply walking along the water's edge. we will be in barbados in a week for a day and already were planning on going to accra and grabbing some rotis at cheffette. is there anywhere within walking distance to get some flying fish, too. steve

Quite possible that one of the little snack-shacks on the beach may have flying fish cutters available
thatbloominplace Posted January 26, 2009 #16 Share Posted January 26, 2009 thank you again! everytime i go to barbados, you are there with new ideas. what looked like just a day at the beach will have the added feature of a walk along the board walk. so now we are ready to show off the best beach to our son and his wife along with rotis, flying fish and a stroll along the boardwalk. does it get any better? by the way, it is currently 1 degree F. leaving tomorrow! steve

Does it get any better? ===> Probably not! By the way, it is currently 1 degree F. leaving tomorrow! Oh boy...you've probably left already, darn itbut just in case someone else might benefit from this snippet of info.. it's a lot kinder on the feet to wear shoes on the boardwalk! The wooden planks have grooved corrugations that generate many a complaint from Barbados residents who are a lot more accustomed to walking barefoot on tough stuff than Tenderfoot's from Up North! And so for you tourists, it's highly recommended that you wear some kinda footwear -or use the two somewhat-smoother concrete strips along the sides of the wide wooden bit in the middle. Even so, I suspect the concrete bits might be too tough for you. Wear shoes.

272 Posted January 28, 2009 #19 Share Posted January 28, 2009 Your pictures are outstanding! Was viewing others on another thread shoot inside the Mariner, and must ask - How do you eliminate the yellow/orange effect in most pictures taken inside cabins and hallways? I though I think you already answered this, but in searching through many pages of the thread, I can not find your reply.

Photoshop. :) This was a particularly difficult one. I don't use flash, so any and all ambient incandescent lighting gets reeaall yellow-gold I pull out gobs of Yellow! This too...was a tough one. ____________________________________________ Click on the Mariner link in my signature block below to see them all
Miss Vickie Posted January 29, 2009 #21 Share Posted January 29, 2009 have you tried adjusting the white balance when yhou take the picture? I've been playing with that a lot lately - the D60 makes it easy to do.

I've been playing with that a lot lately - the D60 makes it easy to do. No I haven't.. but have thought about it and have been meaning to hit the Manual to see how it's done! Early morning ship shots as they come into Port are often excessively blue/cyan as well and give me hell with color correcting! Thanks for the nudge, though! I tend to simply shoot on Auto a lot -a holdover from 5 yrs. of shooting with little Canon Powershot point-and-shoots but I've recently 'discovered' A = Aperture-priority mode  and really need to expand more on the camera's built-in technology _______________________________ Going to get that Manual right now! psupa Posted January 30, 2009 #23 Share Posted January 30, 2009 Aplmac, we will be in Barbados on March 22nd. We aren't beach people but were looking at doing the tour of the Concorde museum. In your opinion is that worth seeing. Also, the ship offers tours but was wondering if you could get there with a cab. I don't know how far it is from the pier, or do you suggest we stay with the ship tour. Not sure what the rates are for a taxi. Any help would be appreciated. In your opinion is that worth seeing. ===> from what I've heard, yes Also, the ship offers tours but was wondering if you could get there with a cab. ===> Yes, it's at the airport, about 10? miles away I don't know how far it is from the pier, or do you suggest we stay with the ship tour. Not sure what the rates are for a taxi. Any help would be appreciated. I haven't done the Concorde tour myself, but anything I've ever read from people who have..it seems to be worth the money..yes! Getting a taxi just outside the Port's gate might be best..if you arrange it with him he'll wait for you at Concorde, and wait for you at The Crane. I just read another somewhere in this Barbados section where a guy paid U.S.$135 for the car for a 4 hr. stint -that might be the sort of arrangement to come to, with your local cabbie? Concorde is at the local airport, maybe 10 miles from the dock and since you'll be within a few more miles of The CRANE it would be a shame to not do Crane as well. Taxi fares? I'm clueless...own my own car here on the island...don't use them, sorry. Why the Crane? Oh! Even if you're not beach people, you can sit in the balcony restaurant at left enjoy the view, have lunch with a Rum Punch or whatever before continuing on to see some more of the island.
