Belize excursion

Recommended Posts

I haven't been able to find too many people who've stopped in Belize. I guess not too many RCL ships go there. Honestly, I don't know much about it at all despite doing some research and checking out this forum, so ...

Has anybody done any excursions in Belize with Chukka? Just wanting to know if it's reputable, worth the cash, etc.

Belize is a fansastic stop on the cruise ship and there is a lot to do. First there is the barrier reef. When you arrive in Belize City you will see the ship twist and turn to stay in the channel which is an old river bed that runs through the reef. The diving, snorkeling etc in Belize is some of the best in the world. The Reef is the second longest Barrier Reef in the world. (Second only to The Great Berrier Reef) So if you are thinking about doing any sort of underwater excursion on your cruise Belize is a great place to do it. Hol-Chan Park is the best place to snorkel in Belize and many of the operators will take you to Hol-Chan. We have booked through the ship and also from an independant operator. The independant operator we used was Fab Tours, www.fabtoursbelize.com They did a great job.

There is also the tubing through the caves and other land based tours as well. Don' t forget to try a Belikin, which is the Belizean local beer.

I've been to Belize 5 times, but have not used Chukka.

The first time we went out to Caye Caulker by water taxi. The second time we joined a van trip to the ruins at Altun Ha at the pier. The last 3 times we went cave tubing: once with Carnival and the other times with independant vendors.

Try the Belize forum for information about Chukka.

Went to Belize last fall. Look up "Major Tom, Belize" on Google and you'll find his website. He and his son and several guides provide several good tours in Belize. Tom himself is an absolute riot if you are lucky enough to have him guiding your group.

Go cave tubing with Tom and not the weirdo that makes people shout his company name in the caves.

We did the Altun Ha Mayan Ruins. They take you about 30 miles out into the jungle. It was a great trip. We booked it through the ship. You will see a lot of how the people live on the bus ride. Spaces where doors should be, but no door. Same with the windows. Barrels of rain water for drinking and bathing. While we were there, some kids brought some of the native animals over that they had captured. They will expect a cash gift if you take their picture.

We did the Mayan Ruins and had a great time. We took a bus for apx a 1hr trip and it went though very interesting areas. Saw how people live with very little. When then took a boat (looked like the kind you saw in Vietnam war videos) through the jungle to the ruins. We saw monkeys, bannana trees, beautiful flowers and had a great ride. It was like being in a different world. The Ruins were great. We had lunch given by the locals and got treated to local beer. I would go again in a minute. Not everything can been seen if you only go to the beach or shopping. Check out the rain forest and the jungle.

We did a snorkeling excursion - private tour which meant we had to tender to Belize and then take another boat out to Caulker Caye for snorkeling. It was great snorkeling but in hindsight it might be worth doing the ship excursion for this because they take you directly off the ship to Caulker Caye which would be a lot less boat riding... We had time to eat lunch on Caulker Caye which was nice.

Try looking under the Ports of Call section and choose Belize. You can read for a while. The current favorite appears to be the cave tubing but the potential for some very good Mayan ruins are best out of Belize. Lamanai (which also has a river trip) and Xunantunich are a couple to look at. We're trying to decide on our own for next spring.

We did an excursion called Altun Ha/River Wallace. Not sure of the spelling.

Took a trip down the river. Lots of wild life. Stopped and had a wonderful lunch along the river made for you. then a bus took us to the ruins.

We had a great time.

Not a place I would wander around at without doing an excursion.
