Bar Harbor & Newport Seafood Dining???

Southbound

Recommended Posts

We will be on the Eurodam starting 9/1, stopping in Bar Harbor, Maine & Newport, RI. Since this will be our first visit to these two ports, we'd like to have lunch at an authentic seafood restaurant (not a chain); in other words, where the locals go. Have looked through brochures and all of the ads look very enticing (naturally), but would like to get first-hand recommendations from cc'ers who have "been there, done that".

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

My suggestions for Newport, in no particular order:

The Black Pearl, Bannister's Wharf, http://blackpearlnewport.com/

Scales and Shells, 527 Thames St., http://www.scalesandshells.com/

The Moorings at Sayers Wharf, http://www.mooringrestaurant.com/

The Brickalley Pub, 140 Thames St., http://www.brickalley.com/

The Red Parrot, 348 Thames St., http://www.redparrotrestaurant.com/html/home.html

The last 2 are not just for seafood; the Brickalley Pub is due east from the tender dock. All others are south from the tender dock. As you walk along the waterfront, you should pass them in this order: Black Pearl, Moorings, Red Parrot. Scales & Shells.

At one time or another I’ve eaten at all on the list except for Scales & Shell, which I will correct on my next visit to Newport. They are all good, but I prefer the Parrot or the BA Pub because I not always looking for a seafood dinner.

For Bar Harbor:

FISH HOUSE GRILL, at the town dock, http://fishhouse-grill.com/

Stewmans Lobsters http://www.stewmanslobsterpound.com/ (at the Bar Harbor location) turn right after leaving the town dock; it will be the next building on the right that you come to on West St

Quarter Deck Restaurant http://www.quarterdeckbarharbor.com/ casual dining at the corner of Main and West Sts. Diangonally across the street from the town dock.

The West St Café, http://www.weststreetcafe.com/ , about 1 block north from the tender dock on West St.

In BH, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with any of the ones I've listed.

Enjoy New England.

Went to Newport a few months ago and started by having a cocktail at Clarke Cook House along with the biggest shrimp cocktail I've ever seen. My friend had Sushi there which he said was excellent.

We walked around for an hour and then went to the Mooring for dinner. Had great scallop chowder and a "bag of donuts" (shrimp, clam, lobster fritters). They were SO good. My dinner was seafood casserole which was ok, my friend had tuna that he loved.

Clarke Cook was right next to the Black Pearl, you can see the back of their building from the Mooring parking lot. Clark Cook had an open wall to the outside and at the Mooring we ate on the covered patio. I can't wait to go back to both.

We live in Newport....the best suggestions on SinBad's list are the Black Pearl, Brick Alley, and the Mooring. The Brick is really where locals go for all pub style food which always includes seafood in this part of the world. If you really want the best Seafood then one of the other two is your best bet. They both have excellent chowder. The Mooring actually has two different chowders - the classic new england clam chowder as well as a scallop chowder. Giarda DeLaurentis did a show on Newport a few years ago and she had chowder at the Mooring.

We just returned from a New England / Canada cruise. This was our fifteenth cruise and one of the few times we have eaten in port, unless it was part of an excursion. I wanted "authentic" lobster and blueberries...

Bar Harbor was our last port, and we had spent most of our time with Oli's Trolley in Acadia Park. I wanted to eat, while DH was eager to explore the best shopping opportunity we had had all week! Every time I stopped to look at a menu posted on a window, DH said the restaurant looked too busy.

We turned down Cottage Street, which is one block to the right of the pier. I found a "hole in the wall" restaurant (at #33) that made a wonderful lobster roll on @ 8" of Italian bread, lettuce, and big chunks of fresh lobster claw, recently tossed in a light mayo dressing! It's name is "The Spot Grill" and it also serves breakfast, including Blueberry Pancakes ("made with heaps of Maine blueberries"). My only regret is that I couldn't have the pancakes too!:D
