Immigrations

We will be taking our first cruise that starts outside of the U.S. next month. I heard that we have to go through immigrations at our first U.S. stop, which is in Maine. Is this correct or do we go though it in New York at the end? Thanks for all the great information I've been getting off the board. I know it's going to help make our cruise better and the others were already great. :D
