Delta Dear Posted September 22, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 22, 2008 Reading the thread on Coco Cay, I wonder if we should skip it. We don't do water sports, or the beach. If there is shade, we could sit and enjoy the scenery, but my husband has to avoid too much sun exposure due to health condition. How often do tenders run, can you go for just a short time and then go back to the ship ? This is our first cruise, so I don't really even know about tenders. How many people do they hold, so do they have to be full before they will transport a group? What is there to do if you don't go to Coco Cay ? karkee07 Posted September 22, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 22, 2008 There will be daytime activies on board for those who just go for the ship experience. There are a lot of shadded areas to chill. I wouln't miss Coco Cay...its becautiful. So lie in a hammock, grab a cocoloco and relax...ahhh I can't wait until January!
David4 Posted September 22, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 22, 2008 I like to lounge in the shade on the beach too. It is a beautiful Island to just lounge around, and you can stay in the shade all day. The tenders run at least every half hour. Go and enjoy for at least some of the day. ehfl Posted September 22, 2008 #4 Share Posted September 22, 2008 The tenders run about every half hour, so you can take a short trip to the island if you want. There is plenty of shade.
BDL Posted September 22, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 22, 2008 i'm planning on staying on the ship... only considering getting off to get my picture taken lying in a hammock with a foofoo drink so I can email it back to my office :D - then take the next tender back to the ship. I can probably find a suitable place to get said picture taken on board too :)
Aleciajoyful1 Posted September 22, 2008 #6 Share Posted September 22, 2008 We usually get off late in the morning once the crowds for the tenders aren't as heavy and have the BBQ lunch on the island. Then we'll sit around and people watch for an hour or so and go back on the ship. Then, you can have second lunch back on the ship! One of the joys of cruising... If it is your first time to CocoCay don't miss it. It is a beautiful secluded island. I personally prefer to stay on board in Nassau and enjoy some quiet time around the pool deck. There is a wonderful pool bar server on the Sovereign, Chester, and he always takes great care of us!
TexCruise371 Posted September 22, 2008 #7 Share Posted September 22, 2008 It's a beautiful island but the last 3 times we've been there we have stayed on the ship and enjoyed a massage, worked out, played in the casino or just enjoyed the ship without the crowd :D
karkee07 Posted September 23, 2008 #8 Share Posted September 23, 2008 To me, missing a Coco Cay opp would be like a sin. lol.
berman947 Posted September 23, 2008 #9 Share Posted September 23, 2008 Just of the Sovereign....there were plenty of activites to do on the ship if you're not a beach person. The best thing about the ships on port days when you stay on it, the pools are much less crowded and the bar servers and quite eager to make sure you're hydrated. Either way, you can't go wrong, since you're on a cruise. :)
English_in_Spain Posted September 23, 2008 #10 Share Posted September 23, 2008 It's a beautiful island but the last 3 times we've been there we have stayed on the ship and enjoyed a massage, worked out, played in the casino or just enjoyed the ship without the crowd :D Is the casino allowed to open while at CocoCay? I didn't think it would be.
pjlee3333 Posted September 23, 2008 #11 Share Posted September 23, 2008 When we went, my thought was like yours. I'm not a beach person and I'm on medication that makes me sensitve to the sun. We thought we'd go over look around and come back and that we'd be there maybe half an hour. We took the tender over at about 10:30-11 to miss most of the morning crowds and liked it so much that we were on the last tender back. There were shaded areas to stay out of the sun and it was a nice relaxing time.
Rare silentbob007 Posted September 23, 2008 #12 Share Posted September 23, 2008 Is the casino allowed to open while at CocoCay? I didn't think it would be. It definitely was this past weekend on the Majesty (I believe slots opened at 9). Perhaps being anchored offshore and having leased the island makes it OK? I'm not a huge beach (or really, sand) person, so I went ashore, put my feet in the water, bought a Coco Loco, then headed back to the ship. Seemed like a good compromise to me. ;)
rushedmom Posted September 23, 2008 #13 Share Posted September 23, 2008 There is a cool glass bottom boat ride you can take as an excersuion on Coco Cay. Definately go over for a while at least. It is such a beautiful spot, I can't wait to get back there!
Trainman-2 Posted September 23, 2008 #14 Share Posted September 23, 2008 Here is a photo of one of RCI's tenders for you. They carry a bunch of people. I can't recall if this one is at Coco Cay or Labadee but they are about the same. I recommend that you go ashore and enjoy yourselves for awhile. There are plenty of shady areas to relax in and read a good book. The Picnic BBQ is pretty nice and being on an island, both different and enjoyable. bigasufan Posted September 24, 2008 #15 Share Posted September 24, 2008 We were at Coco Cay last Monday. It was by far our favorite stop. We laid on the beach for a couple of hours, snorkled, and then found the hammocks. They are very relaxing with lots of shade.
jman_in_minnesota Posted September 24, 2008 #16 Share Posted September 24, 2008 I went parasailing @ CocoCay and it was great, plus the island is a nice change of pace from the boat. The food served on the island, however, could be alot better...

want2seaitall Posted September 24, 2008 #18 Share Posted September 24, 2008 When I first read the thread...I thought..."SKIP COCO CAY...SKIP COCO CAY??? Oh you musn't...you musn't" LOL :) But after reading your full post...I does sound like you may want to stay on board. Coco Cay is absolutely beautiful...one of my favorite places. But it is basically an island with beautiful beaches, water sports, and some shopping. There is plenty of places to sit in the shade...hammocks and loungers...though they go fast when the ship is full. If you are ok to walk a bit, there is plenty more seating in the shade if you continue on the path to the end of the island. The masses usually stick close to the tender docks. Regardless of what you decide to do, I hope you enjoy your cruise.
MarinerGroom Posted September 24, 2008 #19 Share Posted September 24, 2008 We may end up staying on board as well. it sounds like there are a lot of jellyfish and not much else to do.

I've never run in to a problem in jelly fish in Aug-Oct. At least get off the ship and look around the island..it would be silly to miss such a beautiful island! You and your wife can relax in hammock with a cocoloco, shop at the huts, flot on the water with a mat, walk the nature trail. There is a lot to do if you actually look.
