OT: It's always been about the food!

For anyone interested in a little nostalgia... a very dear lady in the church where I grew up recently turned 100 years old, and they interviewed her in the local paper. This is in Urbanna, Virginia, on the Rappahannock River, which feeds into the Chesapeake Bay.

Among the many memories she recalled was this:

"Mrs. Jones remembers the steamboats and she traveled a couple times a year from Burton's Steamboat Wharf in Urbanna to Norfolk and to Matthews County to visit relatives. "I rode on them and it was fun," she said. "The food was delicious and they always had real good fried chicken."

I just thought it was funny... as much as we talk about the food on modern day cruise ships, it was the one thing that stuck with Mrs. Jones many decades after the fact, on this 80 mile trip down the river and bay "to town". Here is a page with a postcard picture of a steamboat entering Burton's Wharf:

Theron hi..great story!

When I was a kid (many moons ago)...and we used to go on vacations....well, my family is one of those....when we were eating breakfast, the conversation would ALWAYS get around to..."what are we going to have for dinner" ,
So, I guess you are right...it has always been about the food

Next up...HORIZON Sept 18th to Bermuda!

This thread has gone in a direction that's hitting close to my home as I am departing for a family visit to Michigan soon. Someone comes in from out of town, the family usually meets at least once at Uncle Harry's Deli (my uncle) and once at an Aunt's where enough chinese food is ordered for 30 people (unless 30 people are there). If someone is born there is a gathering and everyone eats, If the someone is a male child there is a gathering a few days later and everyone eats, when the child turns 13 there is a gathering and everyone eats. If the child gets married after the ceremony everyone eats. If an anniversary is celebrated, everyone eats. At a funeral everyone eats.........it seems it is always about the food! Doree,

When Google popped up the picture I referred to of the wharf, I also saw some hits on a "Steamboat Era Museum" that was being built in Irvington! I couldn't find anything that would say what the current status was... as in, is it open yet? Maybe your friends would have an update?

2) pasta- fresh manicotti
3) gravey meat- sausage, veal, beef, pork (by the way italians say gravey not sauce)
4) baked ham, salad, veg

Catmand,
You sound Jewish! (The final give-away was the mention of chinese food....). I remember one of the old episodes of the Golden Girls where a friend dies and the girls are talking about grief and how various groups get over it. Their Jewish friends have a funeral, eat tons of food, then experience their grief when they have to lose the 10 pounds they gained! Sounds so familiar...... I remember when my mother died and the congregation brought in dozens of fried chicken dinners from one of our favorite places.

Hi Duck, Yes, we call it sauce, the wonderful Italian cooks call it gravy. But now it's been on my mind all day and it will be spagetti gravy in this house. By the way, I sure hope it works out with your trip to Jax to meet Lois. What fun.

..........did I mention when on the Mercury we ate (spelled phone-et-ick-lee)...Duck A La Ronja....isn't that Duck in an orange sauce? Or is it orange gravey?

Oh, it's 5:30 here...i had better be the good "house husband" and go take the corned beef out of the fridge (got a great deal on them after last St. Paddy Day which we spent in Mazatlan)...cooked it yesterday so Mrs. Cat would have nourishment when returning from the daily grind of the working class!
