Suggestions for the day in Barbados

We have been to Barbados on 2 cruises. On our 1st visit, we took a ship-sponsored tour to Harrison's Caves. The caves were truly awesome, with an infinite number of stalactites and stalagmites of all sizes. The ceilings of the caves resembled a cathedral.

On our 2nd visit, we took the Sugar Tour. We visited St. Nicholas Abbey, an old sugar cane plantation, with a Dutch gabled-roof great house. On the day we were there, sugar cane was being harvested and crushed into cane juice. We saw the huge antique diesel-powered cane press in action, saw the rum-making process and sampled the aged rum. We also toured the last cane press powered by a windmill that remains on the island. On the way back to the ship, we stopped at the picturesque Bathsheba coast.

On the last visit, we were surprised by the extensive development on the island. Everywhere we looked, there seemed to be another housing/resort development.

Would recommend taking a taxi straight from the port and making your own itinerary, just make sure you arrange the cost per hour beforehand and confirm if it is US$ or Barbados Dollars. The taxis or vans will wait for you at your choosen stops. I would recommend going to Paynes Bay to swim with the turtles, they usually have some glass bottom boats hanging around there that you can join. Then drive along the West Coast to Speightstown, then to St. Nicholas Abbey (Plantation House not open on weekends) - Cherry Tree Hill - East Coast - Andromeda Gardens (Botanical Garden). Best thing to do is check with your driver as to the time frame you have available. This is probably the best way to explore Barbados in a more private manner.

Thank you for the suggestion. We decided to try out Glory Tours after speaking with Sarah. We are all set for Barbados.

what is a good hourly rate? how much have you (or anyone) paid?

we want to spend a day on the beach and some good snorkeling on this island so the idea is perfect for us.

http://www.shasacatamarancruises.com/ This was the highlight of our cruise. We did the 5 hour lunch tour and it was worth it. Jason is a wonderful man, he took excellent care of us. We swam with the turtles and snorkeled at a couple reefs. Lunch was delicious. We will do this tour every time we are in Barbados.
