Jeep reservation issues

Yes, reserving in advance is really a good idea. Even when we were on the island in June during low season and decided to rent at the last minute, we had to go to our 3rd choice of car rental companies to find a vehicle.

We rented a jeep in Aruba a few years ago and enjoyed it. We drove it to the top of the national park which is very high and extremely rocky.

 

They gave us a map, but unless they've changed things in the last two years, there are no street signs so it's hard to know where you are.

I have never thought until now to ask this question....but in the Caribbean I assume when you rent a vehicle (not a Motorcycle) you can use your State Issued Drivers license to drive with....Is that correct?

Yes, you can drive in the Caribbean with a U.S. issued license, although on some islands you have to drive on the left side of the road...it can be a little tricky ;-)

Where is the best place to rent a JEEP brand jeep near the port? I have looked through the Aruba sites and there are so many different businesses that advertise, I was hoping you experts here could help me narrow my search?

on some islands you have to drive on the left side of the road...it can be a little tricky ;-)

In Aruba driving is on the right side of the road. :)

as we walked out of the port, http://www.arubatopdrive.com/index.html is located at a booth waiting to drum up business.

 

I had emailed them prior to our arrival on Nov 13th and they held a Durango without us having to leave a credit card online. Total cost for rental was USD 85.00

Stay away for the Thrifty Car Rentals..... Their Wrangle Jeep's are junk.

We rented from the Renaissance Hotel close for Cruise travelers BUT the vehicles are JUNK

We had to request a second Jeep as the first had ripped out plastic window so that you could not secure anything within the vehicle.

2nd vehicle even worse..... No working Air-conditioning, Engine light stayed on 10 minutes after leaving hotel for the duration of our drive, wipers so worn and ripped at ends they would not clean window during rain.

Holes in the roof, dripping rain on legs and head. Plastic windows so yellow and scratched you could not see out of them for side mirrors.

 

When I returned the vehicle after 2.5 hours of a 24 hour rental and spoke to Irene Sunday (Thrifty employee) she stated she knew of the vehicle problems and just shrugged her shoulders. She would not reduce my rental charge.

 

When we returned home, we noticed she did not discount our rental by 10% due to using of American Express Card as book on the web site.( Charged 97.99 instead of 86.21)

See could see other rentals from Budget and other firms, much better condition with glass windows and overall appearance.

 

I will be contacting Thirfty customer service on this issue.

Thrifty notified re: my Jeep rental, I was told I would hear back within 14 to 21 business days as this is an international complaint.

We love our bike in the states, but my husband is a little leary about doing it in a strange place. Sadly, the only time we have tried, in Key west, our bike left us stranded on the side of the road for an hour in a oddly desolate spot in the keys. Thankfully we had our cell phones.

 

I think renting a bike or a jeep would be great fun, but I'm having a hard time talking him into it. We have never been to aruba. Is it modern, like cozumel or Cancun? or is it more rustic like Tortula? How bad could it get out on our own?
