Tortola doable?

Groover

We will be in St. Thomas from 9-8 is it feasible to think we can catch a ferry to Tortola and possibly make it to Cane Garden Bay and back to St. Thomas with time to spare?

Tortola is not all that close to St. Thomas. It's doable by ferry, yes, but it will be about a 3 hour round trip. And, you need to go through immigration coming and going. It's best reserved for either a land-based vacation or for a cruise that calls on Tortola. If the immigration officials on duty are on "island time" the wait can be long.

I agree - it's further than you think (or it looks!)

Tortola is a very pretty island -one look at their stunning postcards tells you that

but you're better off waiting fror a cruise that stops there.

This is no next-door-island-hop, trust me.

There are just as pretty areas on St. Thomas and even nicer areas on St. John. Tortola is nice but save it for a Tortola port of call.

My favorite trip there is a day sail on one of the sail boats (private excursion) out of Red Hook. Google St Thomas days sail and find a web site that lists the dozen or so boats including the Winifred and Rumbaba. Pick one off the list and do it! A great day.

We did it! We were ported from 8-6 and made it easily. We ported at Crown Bay, took the $4 taxi to town (they let us off at the ferry), got our tickets, filled out paperwork and were on our way by 9:00. We arrived at West End, made the big mistake of getting off, then had to take a taxi to Roadtown. Take the ferry the whole way if you are going there. WE went to shop a little and to Great Cane Bay, caught the 3:00 (I believe) from Roadtown. We were back in St T by 4:00 and through immigration quickly. BTW...we did not stop at St John for anything...all was done in St T for immigration. Also, we did call the ferry before we went to confirm good weather for the day. Glad we did....beautiful ride on the ferry and Tortola was wonderful!
