Alaska Temperature question

So I watched the cruise week specials (for what seems like the 3rd time) I noticed that the travelers on the Alaska cruise were wearing jackets. This may seems silly, but the thought had never occurred to me to pack a coat.

So here is the question...Does it get that cold?

Even if it is in the 70s, which it could be, it will get cold near the glaciers. I recommend a coat and an umbrella - that way you won't need either.

Absolutely you need a coat. There are plenty of packing lists that will be helpful for you. But at the least you need- lined lightweight jacket, layers of sweatshirts, tshirts, turtlenecks. Long pants- I like lined and unlined wind pants- again the key is quick drying. 2 pair of walking shoes, good rain gear, knit hat gloves. I have see way too many people NOT prepared for the range of weather- don't be one of them. Nothing hinders your enjoyment like being too cold to enjoy the glacier views. Bring a full set of winter clothes, heavy coat, hat gloves, etc. When the ship is sailing near the glaciers it's freezing outside. The best view is out on deck so you don't want to miss anything. There are always some people that have to stand inside and look through a window at the view because they did not bring warm clothing.

Even sillier question--is it cold there if you cruise in the summertime? (PLEASE excuse my ignorance!)

Yes - I was referring to the summertime in my previous post. While the temperature might hit 80 once in a while, it can be freezing out on deck.

We sailed Alaska the first week of September. Recommend layering that crew gave us. Long sleeve T-shirt, then fleece, topped off by windbreaker. By all means bring hat and mitten or gloves.
Of course being from Minnesota my DH and I were the only ones on board in shorts and sweatshirts.

I'm really glad I asked. All of my previous cruises were to the Caribbean or Mexico etc and although it rained from time to time. It was never cold (even in the winter). Good thing I watched the Travel Channel!

So now I have to figure out how to pack light and appropriate at the same time.

i agree with the previous posters, layers is the way to dress in Alaska. both times I've been to Alaska it has been in July, but we've experienced everything from rain and really cold weather to really warm and semi HOT weather. most of the times in the port cities it won't be that cold. last year in Ketchikan it was in the high 70's. i was hot and sweating! but then again when we were at Glacier Bay it was cold cold cold, like teeth chattering cold, especially when you're standing out on deck for hours and hours trying to see the glaciers!

so layers are definitely the way to go!

for all of those going to alaska, enjoy! you'll have the trip of a life time...
