sky 11-21 to 11-24 review

well, all in all we had a nice weekend away. we took the kids and MIL.

we were originally in 9127 and 9128, both inside cabins. very shortly after getting into our cabins we got our luggage and i wanted to put some things away before muster drill, but the closet shelves were all wet. that's when we noticed that the ceiling was leaking and it steadily got worse and worse until the carpet in the front half of the cabin was all wet.

we went to reception and asked them to send someone right away. they sent 2 guys who pretty much sat on the sofa for the next 2 hours watching the water leak into the cabin, at this point they didn't even get buckets! anyway, after muster 2 more guys showed and and they had to diassemble half the ceiling.

we ended up back at reception and they moved us to 9212, a balcony room, which was very fair for them to do. and we weren't too far from MIL and the kids.

once settled we called MIL and the kids and they didn't answer the phone so we walked over to their cabin to go get some dinner and it turns out that they were locked in their cabin and the phone didn't work! they were somewhat scared as they had been banging on the door for about 10 minutes with no response. even from right outside the door i couldn't hear them. finally DD slipped her room key under the door and i was able to open it. reception quickly sent someone to fix the lock and the phone. i don't know why but we have the WORST luck with NCL cabin doors!

nassau was very nice, cool and windy. we almost couldn't dock there due to the wind but a carnival ship was nice enough to switch berths with us to block the wind and we docked safely.

we took a cab to atlantis and walked around for a while and stumbled into the aquarium. i'm not sure how we did it, but we were able to walk through without bracelets. it was nice in there, but i wouldn't pay those HUGE prices that they want for excursions. then we went back to the shop for lunch and back to port for straw market shopping. we left nassau late due to docking late.

that night we had plumbing issues and the toilets on parts of deck 9 didn't flush for about 4 hours. my daughter also said that they didn't flush in the restrooms across from the reception desk.

reception also sent us a bottle of wine for our troubles with the cabin leak which was a nice gesture. and they sent my MIL and kids a plate of chocolate covered strawberries.

the next day we couldn't tender at GSC but that was fine with us, i prefer a sea day. we mainly hung out in the sports bar so the kids could play foosball and air hockey in the teen room. there were A LOT of unhappy guys in the sports bar later on when they found out that no football games would be shown.

we found the food to be just OK, we only ate at the buffet for one breakfast and one lunch, otherwise we went to the dining room.. the service was slow, but MUCH better then the Sun when we were on it in April. we found one waitress on our first afternoon named melanie who was AMAZING. we tried to get tables with her for dinners, but they were always so busy that we couldn't. we found the wait times to be 15-45 minutes in the mail dining rooms at 6:30ish.

the next time we saw melanie was at breakfast before leaving the ship and she remembered both kids by name. i definately suggest finding her when possible.

we only made it to one show, the comedian, rich purpura and found it to be funny and appropriat eenough for the kids to watch. we also attended the magic lesson he put on for the kids, then he was selling magic tricks. mainly junk.

we bought a future cruise credit, even if we only use it to do another weekend getaway it's worth it.

my ONE really big peeve was the bar waitress at dinner one night directly asked the kids if they wanted a soda or smoothies and of course before i could blink they both ordered smoothies. at $6 each plus tip, i wasn't too happy! she should have consulted the adults, not the kids.

Well it sounds like the kinks aren't worked out of the Sky yet then? I was considering this as it is cheaper, and I was thinking of adding my Older DD to come along. But I'm not sure I want to chance bathrooms no working or not getting out my door. LOL! I'll have to think about it some more. Sadly this ship is the one that goes just the amount of days I need to ports I am interested in.

Yikes! Ran into a few serious problems, i'm glad to hear NCL handled everything well though they did try their best. I think they need to accept that fact the Sky needs to go into dry dock ASAP, these are not problems obviously that will just go away without major work being done...I keep hearing of tons of problems.

We have insides on Deck 9 for our B2B on Sky... 9349 & 9343 lets just hope for the best.

yes, 9127 is a handicapped accessible room. my DH is legally blind as has had issues with navigating in small inside rooms so we chose the larger accessible cabin. i have pics if you'd like to see it. i didn't get pics of 9128 but it's a standard small inside with a pullman as the 3rd bed.

at the end of our weekend the room looked fixed, so i wouldn't worry.

jenseib, i wouldn't advise you to stay away from the Sky, just know that you get what your paying for.

it's a nice, inexpensive weekend away.

we did not order room service except for coffee on the last morning. although we did on the Sun and it was AWESOME for after a long day in port. just make sure to tip the delivery person a few bucks.

Did you try room service at all while on the cruise? and if you did how was it.

I am sure my 16 year old cousin is going to want to order room service while on the cruise in Feb.

I ordered a sandwich and pizza from room service. It came in a reasonable amount of time and the food was okay.

Would you mind posting photo of 9127? My son (quadriplegic) is booked for that cabin in January.

Thanks a bunch.

My wife and I just got off the sky for the 11/24 - 11/28 cruise. The sky could definitely use a dry docking. We were in Room 0003 and the smell from our toilet could be sickening at times.

We had a good time though. The food is a little on the average side. Not up to par with what I think of from the cruise industry.

The staff is great though, we had no problems with any staff members and they were readily available.

It is scheduled for an extensive drydock in April. I understand it will be 3 months before it is back in service.

I booked the Sky early on when bookings first opened up. Canceled soon after when reports of plumbing and a/c problems started streaming in here. Looks like the a/c is fixed, but the plumbing problems still are an issue. I understand that NCL is only leasing her from Star, but folks who book her have the reasonable expectation that basic features like plumbing should be functional. They don't care who owns this ship and who should be responsible to foot the bill for repairs to get this ongoing issue resolved. These negative reports will not help Star Cruises find a buyer for this ship anytime soon.

I was on the Sky for the 4 days cruise in September and had a reallly nice time. No plumbing or A/C problems at all. I think the cabin was 0023. Small balcony, but nice area of the ship. In fact I am going again for a weekend December 12th. How could you not book a weekend for chaper than it costs to stay home? Like they all say.....A bad day on a cruise is better than a good day at work..........For the cost we paid, I can't complain.

I agree that since I live in South Florida it is less expensive than those who incur travel costs as well. Im not sure I would fly down for a three day cruise but if that is all the time you can take off I totally understand. I really did enjoy myself on the Sky in September. The staff was extremely friendly, the food was good and I even won a little in the casino. We didn't even have a drop of rain. I have been on many cruises before, RCCL, Carnival, and Celebrity. The four day was my first NCL and like the others after reading about how terrible the reviews were, I was also considering canceling and rebooking on another line. We decided to stick it out and had a wonderful time. When the opportunity came to go again for the three day cruise on the Sky, I jumped at it. We are also booked for our first HAL cruise Feb 1st on the Westerdam. My hope is that I won't be the only 50ish on the ship. I understand they roll the decks up at 9 :)
