Just back from the Star 11/5

Hello all. Just got back from the Star. It was an interesting trip. Here are a few tips and findings.

-If you have pre and/or post cruise packages through NCL as we did make sure you know what times the shuttle is picking you up at your hotel and taking you to the pier and/or the airport. The hotel we stayed at in LA (Westin Century Plaza) had no idea and referred me to NCL. NCL in turn assured me someone would be there. They never showed to take us to the airport. On calling NCL we were told that they did not know what happened as it is a "Complimentary Service". Basically they had our money and did not care.

-Food was unremarkable. Did not go to any of the "Co-pay" dining rooms. Heard that Le Bistro (french), Cagney's (Steak), and Tempanyki (Japanese) were good. Ate in Versaille and Aqua. Ok food there. Endless Summer (tex mex) with no co-pay, but need reservation. Was ok. I prefer fixed seating.

-Drink prices were out of control with 15% autogratuity added, including bottled water when taking off ship. Good drinks in evening at Bier Garten, Star Bar, and Pearl Martini. 10-15$ with tip for 2 drinks.

-Acapulco is HOT. Be prepared for it. Also be prepared to be constantly acosted on leaving the port on your own. We did not take a tour that day, but went on our own. The Cliff divers were neat, but quick. Took an official cab, a suburban for 2 of us 25$ and he waited for us. The show that evening on board is a folkloric show and we were told by some on a tour of the fort it was the same as one they saw at the fort, but paid for it. Friends took Taxco day trip 4 hrs there and little time to shop, not worth it.

-Zihuatenjo-Still hot. Neat little town. Good bargins can be found here. Partner wanted to do the swim with dolphins. Fun with dolphins. Someone on group was robbed while waiting for video. The place has one machine to copy video and it takes 1/2 hr. Free pic with price, given to you on floppy disk. Waited in heat for 1.5 hrs and were told that we could take a cab if we did not want to wait. NCL heard from the whole group and did nothing.

-Puerta Vallarta- Took town country and tequila tour. Fun tasted 4 kinds of tequila. Prices from 25 to 55 dollars. Definitely not St. Thomas prices. Time to shop. Good taco at factory. Friends told me that Factory and Shopping tour does not allow much time for shopping.

-Cabo. If you like snorkeling take the Chilleno Snorkeling tour. On a catamaran. Clean with soda, beer and water there and snorkeling in water through schools of fish. Time to shop. Town right off pier.

-Last sea day rough and cold.

-On embarkation-only ship in port. Stood in line for over 1 hr. Forgot my Latitudes card and could not go into that line. Only glanced at proof of identity.

-On disembarkation 3 ships in port. Stood in line for 1 hr for immigration. Line -completely around ship.

If you get a chance look up a Romanian Jr Bar Server named Monica in the Star Bar or the Casino. Very friendly. Our group fell in love.

The shows weren't bad.

All in all it was an ok cruise. Not my best. It will be a long time till I take NCL again. RCI or Princess here I come.

We cruised the "Star" October 20-28. Some counterpoints to your message:

ACAPULCO - Agree with you about being accosted right outside the pier; the cab drivers and so-called tour guides are obnoxious. Having had a bad experience when my husband and I were in Acapulco a couple of years ago, my daughter and I opted to take two shore excursions with NCL. We saw the cliff divers in the afternoon and went to the "Evening at the Fort of San Diego" after dinner.

The Folkloric show at the Fort was NOT the same as the one on the ship. Yes, we paid for the evening at the Fort, but it was well worth the money. We had a tour of the museum. After the tour, we sat down at tables outdoors at the top of the fort and were served as many margaritas as we wanted while we watched the show. The group at the Fort was the Mexican Folkloric Ballet who performed along with a 10-piece Mariachi Band. The dancers and musicians were top notch. The group on the ship was The Antonio Ramirez Mexican Festival which I had seen before on another cruise ship. They, too, are good but lack the personality of the Ballet group.

FOOD -In our opinion the food on NCL is very good and if you spend the extra money at the specialty restaurants, you'll get an excellent meal and very attentive service. The freestyle dining is convenient and you don't have to sit with the same people at the same time every night (unless you want to). We find the "casual dress" convenient for our style of packing and dressing on a vacation. Not having to pack any fancy clothes is very liberating and we can fit everything in one carry-on suitcase. We like the security of having our luggage with us on our flight to our destination.

EMBARKATION - We, too, did not have our Latitudes cards with us but our travel agent put our numbers on the cruise tickets. We got in the Latitudes line and the information was in NCL's system. No problem.

DISEMBARKATION - Our disembarkation had no long lines. We had a flight at noon so we were one of the first groups to leave the ship. Also, we were the only ship in port.

DRINKS - We thought the drink prices were fair and didn't mind the 15% gratuity charge. Agree that the "fancy" drinks were overpriced and who needs the glass as a souvenir! We thought the football helmets with beer bottles that people carried around were ridiculous. One guy brought his helmet to dinner at the Versailles. Tacky!!

As for the bottled water, we brought a bottle in an insulated carrier with a strap (bought at a sporting goods store) and filled it every day at the buffet.

Did you go to any of the formal nights? Did a lot of people dress up?

What type of room did you have?

Was this your first experiance with Free-style cruising? How did you like it compared to eating at the same time with the same people every night?

We are going on the Star 3/5 and the more reviews I read the more I feel I made the wrong choice and should have gone with Carnival.

Another take on the Star Mex. Riviera cruise:

ACAPULCO- We also felt the cab drivers were very persistant, but finally settled on one to take us on a 2 hour tour for $50 (we were splitting the cost between 4 people, so not so bad). Had researched this option on the Mex Riv. Board-Roberto at ACA Port Authority so felt fairly confident about it. It turned out fine and we saw some beautiful scenery, luxury homes and the beautiful chapel on the hill with the large cross you can see from where the ship comes in. He left us at Sr. Frog's...the view is great from there too, and we caught a cab back to the ship. ACA is huge, over 2 million people in city and surrounding area; we skipped downtown. Got another cab that night for the 10:30 cliff divers; he came in with us, got a table and waited to bring us back. Easy.

EMBARKATION-It's a good idea to always give your Latitudes # when you book cruise...it will be on your ticket, no card needed.

DISEMBARKATION- We were told Customs and Immigration were late in arriving on board that day due to the 3 ships in port. Not NCL's fault. Actually, I think it worked out better, as I have read that you first need to go thru immigation on board and then thru customs after leaving the ship and claiming luggage, but we did both at the same time on the ship.

DRINKS-Agree with janettep and we learned from past cruises about the water and bring our own to refill.

Thanks to everyone on the boards for taking the time to inform....want to now give back as much as possible.

Yes, all rooms have thier own temp control and you do not need a hairdryer, cabins come with them, (along with soap and a conditioning shampoo dipenser).. However, if you want to bring your own, there is a 110 volt outlet for your dryer.

Could you give me a little more detail about the "dolphin swim" in Ixtapa. Such as, what is the ratio of people to dolphins, how much time and what kind of interaction does each person have with the dolphin? While you are waiting for your turn is there a place in the shade you can wait? Is there anyplace to put your valuables while you are in the water? Do you get a picture right away or do you stand in line for that as well as the video?

Thank you so much for any advice, I have been posting every week for a report on this excursion and you are the first to even mention the "dolphin swim"!

I'm sorry you had some problems on the trip but I always take issue when people say such blanket statements like "NCL doesn't care." There was obviously a mistake and unfortunately you were inconvenienced. But to say NCL doesn't care is like saying they purposefully want to alienate people. That's just my opinion though. Thanks for the review. We're looking to book the Star next September 30 for the Mexican Riviera. I've cruised on the Star before and really like it.

We are going on the Star for Christmas. I have a couple questions for anyone that has been on it recently.....Do all the rooms have their own temperature control? Do I need anything special for my blow dryer...I have an 1875 watt one. I appreciate the info!!!;)

Realestatemomma, why don't you join us on the "NCL Roll Call" boards "12/23/04 Star - Mexican Riviera" So far a total of 8 has announced their interest in meeting each other.:)

Quick question for past Star cruisers. Does anyone know if the TV's in the staterooms have the video plugs in front. You know, so you can plug in your camcorder and review the days events. I have a daughter that is disabled and tends to spend time in her room when she is worn out. We usually take our own dvd player and movies. The TV's without the plugs require another component.

We really enjoyed our cruise on the Star to Mexico! The Star is a gorgeous ship and the crew was wonderful! :)

I would say Acapulco has it's ups and downs....on the upside there was some beautiful places to see, but on the downside it was HUGE, and very hot and humid (102 F and 86% humidity) when we were there Oct. 31!

We found that we preferred doing things on our own rather than booking excursions through the ship. It wasn't too difficult getting around Acapulco as long as you get a cab driver that you can understand! Hope that helps! :)

Enjoy your cruise!

WOW! 102 degrees on Oct 31st, I was expecting some nice warm weather but I think I would melt in that kind of heat. I hope it is under 90 when I am there next week.

With one exception (Canopy Tour), I am going to book all my excursions once I get into port, I love to be "frugal" and who knows what I will be in the mood for that day. I have read all the Star reviews and that looks like the best thing for me, I haven't read any big horror stories yet.

See ya on the flip side.

Thanks to everyone for their reviews. I'm looking forward to reading more in the coming weeks. My last cruise was on a very drab ship, painted a formal shade of gray. ;)

So this will be my first true pleasure cruise! I've always wanted to go on one and am finally going to do just that. Something tells me it won't be the last time either!

To answer some of the previous messages.

This was our first freestyle dining cruise. We preferred the more structured dining experience on other ships. Prior to this we always traveled with larger groups of friends. This time it was a smaller group and we were basically alone most of the time. We are also the type of people who like to dress nicer for supper. Again the food we ate was not bad, but it did not seem great either, but we did stay away from the rooms with co-pays. They may have been alot better.

There was one formal night in the Versaille room no reservations. Seemed like there were a good many people who participated. But it is not required. We left on Thursday and the formal night is the 1st or second sea day.

We had a balcony room forward. We loved it. We did see some inside rooms that seemed the same size or bigger.

The ship is a lovely ship and as with all ships you finally figure things out when it is time to get off. No complaints of crew.

The dolphin adventure was fun when you are in the water. You go in groups of 10-15 and for 45 minutes you are in the water. They have the dolphins swim in and around you while you are in the water. You wear good life vests. They have the dolphins kiss you, you ride them belly to belly, and then 2 dolphins push you on top of water by each foot. It was fun. They are taking video the entire time you are in the pool and this can be purchased for 30 dollars, they have one machine and it takes 20-30 minutes to copy each tape. You get 1 free pic with each ticket. You get it on a floppy disc. Leave all jewelry on the ship you can not wear it in the pool. No security. open cubicles to leave your belongings. Someone was robbed in our group while waiting for the tape. NCL never replied to our complaints. This probably colored our cruise experience. We waited 1.5 hrs in heat.

Acapulco is actually an interesting town. We concentrated on old town as it was Sunday and a lot of the sotres in the newer section were closed. We are told that the new section is better. Cliff divers were great.

The other 3 ports we enjoyed better. Don't be afraid to bargain. Nice pottery. Look around.

All in all it was enjoyable. I will never say never to NCL, but next year it will probably be Princess in Tahiti. Go with an open mind and just enjoy the experience.

You mentioned you had problems with NCL pre/post cruise stay at the hotel. In reading I'm thinking you had post stay and trouble getting to the airport. We have precruise booked with NCL and am wondering about being met at the airport - getting to the hotel - from the hotel to the ship the next day. Any experience anyone? Thanks

TRY MORE LIKE 90 DEGREES WITH THE HUMIDITY. I WAS THERE, HOT BUT NOT TOO BAD. 102 DEGREE + HUMIDITY, PEOPLE WOULD HAVE DIED!

We were also on this cruise. It was our first NCL experience although we have done several cruises...HAL, Windstar, Orient Lines.

We chose it as we had our adult daughters with us and felt it would be more to their liking than HAL. Also we preferred the itinerary. I think we were correct on both counts.

I like the NCL embarkation procedure with the drink and paperwork onboard. It was like Windstar, except fo rthe other 2000 passengers! It worked well when we got there around 1130. There was a long lineup to deposit the luggage but we managed to get a rare porter and for a small tip it was taken care of. What was interesting was that this was happening at the back of the line so it was "too bad" if you had been there a while. I have no idea how long it took to deposit in person.

The ship is nice. We had a balcony forward as well. It was a nice cabin. Prefer the HAL pools with the cover that retracts. I was surprised it was such a small pool on the Star given the size of the ship. The first and last sea days (especially the latter) it was cool on deck so we didn't use the pool.

I found the service on board to be excellent. Lots of staff around. The drink prices were acceptable. Maybe we just feel better now that our Canadian $ has regained some purchasing power! There were happy hour, drink of the day specials etc. I think the added gratuaity was the right approach as we never really "found" a server to tip as we tended to use different bars.

Food was better than I expected. We paid for Le Bistro one nite and it was excellent. Salad selection was limited. Beef and fish we found to be good. Overall not as good as we have found HAL in the past but still quite good.

Layour of the ship we found to be a bit complicated. In splitting up areas so it doesn't seem so large, it is a bit "chopped up" but this is not necessarily a bad thing.

We enjoyed the entertainment except for the comedy. I guess that wasn't our taste. The rest was of a high quality. Generally better than HAL, we thought. Sorry I didn't mean this to become a comparison report.

We took the $3 water taxi in ZIHUATANEJO across the bay to the beach. We enjoyed it as the snorkling was quite good just off the beach. Corona $1.50, I think so we could afford that!

In PV we went to town. Disorganized mess to get the transportation and with 3 or us we probably would have been better getting a taxi, but I am not sure. Then took a taxi back to the Krystal hotel and paid $15 day use fee each. We had a good time there, swimming in the ocean and their pool with swimup bar. We overheard one of the staff mentioning this option as we were getting off. Apparently this is what they do if they have some shore time.

In Cabo we booked the Sailing and Snorkeling to Santa Maria through the NCL website before we left. This tour sold out. It was $64 but an excellent tour. Nice boat, good equipment and we enjoyed the snorkeling. Much better than we expected. They gave a jelly fish warning but we did not see any. The open bar after snorkling was more than generous.

One aspect that NCL could clearly handle better if they tried was US immigration. We spent 45 mins in line (other report was 1 hour) so why didn't they just announce revised times based on the cabin decks. We were supposed to be 815 but it was 9am when we reached the front. Not the best way to end the trip. If we had seen thattheype of line when we got on we would have thought that we would never go on a large ship again. I realize they don't control the officers but they could control getting their guests to the officers!

The Star is very fast but we detected a slightly unusual movement when it was rougher. It is more of a yaw than a pitch or roll. I suspect a flat bottom and the stabilizers looking after the pitch and roll very well. Maybe something to do with the lack of rudders. I don't know. We have been in lots or rough seas (up to force 11) so it wasn't that we were unused to ship movement.

Overall for us a great vacation.

Nurseone,

We had a pre and post cruise package through NCL. We stayed at the Westin Century Plaza in LA. On arrival at airport we met the NCL agent just before getting to the baggage area. She was very nice. With our baggage in tow we were taken to the Super Shuttle area and were taken to the hotel. Warning with Super Shuttle you don't leave the airport till the van is full. Took a fun 1/2 hour tour of the airport till it was full. The hotel is beautiful. Nice area. Helpful staff. Our problem was that we had the hotel switched at the last minute by NCL. Contrary to what our vouchers said there was no NCL staff there to assist us. We were taken by Super Shuttle the next day to the port. We left at 1pm. We called NCL 800# and eventually were told what to do. The hotel did not have information on this. Our real problem was with the post cruise package. They never picked us up to take us to the airport. On calling NCL again we were told that they did not know what happened and that it was a complementary service. Basically it seemed as if they were saying the cruise is over we got your money. We scrambled to get a cab to the airport and arrived to be told the flight was delayed 2 hours anyway. Buses meet you after to take you into town or to the airport for those with vouchers. You should have no problem with getting to the hotel and the port. Have fun and enjoy.

PS. A friend took the canopy tour and said it was fun. Strenuous at times with hiking, but fun. Take care one person didn't brake in time and hit a tree. She was fine though.

Thank you for answering my questions about the dolphin swim, we are unsure about this "adventure" and I have just a couple more questions. When you wait your turn (up to 1-1/2) are you sitting in a shady area (my Mother is 79 and has a heart condition) and are your belongings (clothes, shoes, etc.) within view of where you are in the pool? Since 10-15 people are "sharing" a dolphin do you figure you get about 5 minutes each with the dolphin?

Thank you

Debr,

To start off there are several dolphin experiences to choose from. I was on the one in Ixtapa. Don't get me wrong. It was fun, but frustrating. When you get there you are taken to a shaded waiting area for maybe 10 minutes at the most. You are then taken to the pool. It is maybe 20 feet deep, but you are given a large vest to wear. All 10-15 people are in the pool at the same time. There are 4 stations and you each get a turn at each station. They give significant time at each station with the dolphins and they swim in and around you. You get to kiss the dolphin (if desired). They feel like wet rubber that smells fishy. You ride belly to belly with the dolphin and you ride on top of the water being pushed by a dolphin on each foot. The pool is extremely large and there were 3 groups at the same time in without bothering the other.

If you decide to take this adventure, I would reccomend leaving jewelry at home. They did tape a women's rings. This is for the dolphins protection as there are extremely sensitive areas. The area where the belongings are kept are open are cubbies within your site. The hour and a half wait happened after the swim when waiting for the videos. It is covered, but open. There is only one copying machine. It was while waiting here that the person was robbed in our group. Someone walked in from the outside and distracted her and another person picked her bag.

All in all it was a fun once in a lifetime adventure. A bit expensive, but fun.

We are staying at the Doubletree hope they don't change us like the idea of being in Santa Monica - seems like there are lots of things to do. You indicated that they didn't pick you up until 1pm to take you to the ship. Hoping we can go earlier than that. Will check when we get there. Thanks again for the information.
