copper6606 Posted December 1, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 1, 2008 Are there any suggestions on getting to Rum point? We don't really like renting cars in places that we are not familiar with and the cabs were not willing to drive us there and then wait. I understand this but there are no cabs there for the return trip! I was considering a tour company - but they want to take you to other things along the way[ snorkeling, stingrays etc.] We just want to go to the beach over there for the day! Any ideas?? bookbabe Posted December 2, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 2, 2008 Unfortunately, those are pretty much your only options. If you want to hit a beach for the day by taxi, your better bet is one of the sections of Seven Mile Beach (Royal Palms or Sea Grape). Both of those are much closer to the port, and you can easily take a bus or taxi there and back.
copper6606 Posted December 3, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted December 3, 2008 Yes, we have been to those beaches 3 separate times - but would like to see the other side of the Island. I think I'll have to work on my husband to rent a car!
shagmo Posted December 3, 2008 #4 Share Posted December 3, 2008 What about the local bus? I've heard there is decent bus service, don't know if it goes there. Anyone have any experience? Thanks.
drew sailbum Posted December 3, 2008 #5 Share Posted December 3, 2008 The local bus does not travel as far as Rum Point. Rum Point is in the district of North Side. Referring to the Grand Cayman map here http://www.caymanlandinfo.ky/imagemapfiles/gcindex.htm Rum Point is in box #120. The bus only goes as far as the Hutland Road intersection in box #111. NoVa Mimi Posted December 6, 2008 #6 Share Posted December 6, 2008 Drew, your map is great! Where is the cruise ship pier on the map? My husband and I are thinking of renting a car (have no idea how to, however) and driving up to Rum Point. Thanks for any info you can share! drew sailbum Posted December 6, 2008 #7 Share Posted December 6, 2008 The tender terminals are on the west shore in George Town in box #29. Note the map is several years old and does not show the new Royal Watler Terminal which was built on the waterfront opposite Fort Street. If you arrive on a day when the winds are blowing from the northwest (as a cold front comes down out of the Gulf of Mexico) then the ship may tender to the alternate site in Spotts. The Spotts location is on the south coast in box #63.
ScottNkimmy Posted December 17, 2008 #8 Share Posted December 17, 2008 Many people on the board have rented cars in GC with no issues - DH and I are doing that too. The routes look pretty easy to navigate and we're renting for the day for $70 or so. We hae a resservation with Andy's (http://www.andys.ky/) and they pick up and drop off right at the pier. We're going to be in GC on 7 Jan and can't wait!!
