lillygator Posted December 14, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 14, 2008 how far is it from the pier? is there snorkeling there? can you rent chairs, umbrellas? would a taxi really be that expensive to get there from the port?
drew sailbum Posted December 15, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 15, 2008 Rum Point is about a 45 minute drive from the pier (if traffic in town is not too bad). By road it is "only" about 26 miles. There is snorkeling there. Go out from the dock. Off to the right the coral is a bit closer. You cannot rent chairs - they are provided free of charge! Some chairs have a sun shade but not many. There are large areas with shade from trees. If you need more shade you can rent a cabana cover for a chair. A taxi really would cost that much! Maybe more! Yes it really would be cheaper to rent a car and drive it yourself.
bookbabe Posted December 15, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 15, 2008 Two weeks ago, a taxi from that general area to the airport was $72 US plus tip. That's the usual fare, since fares are set by area rather than a meter system. From the port, it might be a bit more than that. The other problem you'll run into is that there won't be any taxis waiting at Rum Point to take you back afterwards. You'll have to pre-arrange a return trip, or maybe pay extra for a driver to wait for you. Rent a car or book a tour. :D Or, just go to Seven Mile Beach, which is about a $4-6 taxi ride (per person, each way) from the pier.
