10X Posted December 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 18, 2008 In January we will begin a 12 day cruise from Auckland to Sydney, followed by a 7 day cruisetour in Australia, 2 days on Kangaroo Island, then 7 days in Melbourne before returning home. I am interested in purchasing some warm sheepskin apparel to bring back here to cold-cold Michigan. I am interested in quality more than price. Any suggestions on where to shop in the following cities? Auckland Tauranga Christchurch Dunedin Hobart Melbourne Sydney Darwin Cairns Adelaide Thank you. Kiwi Kruzer Posted December 18, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 18, 2008 Just another thought... as well as sheepskin products keep your eye out for garments made with Merino wool. They are not cheap, but are very light and have excellent thermal qualities. editing to add..... this is one store that I know ,but I am sure there are many others... http://www.kathmandu.co.nz/# as well as camping and outdoor gear they carry a great range of warm clothing. mochuck Posted December 18, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 18, 2008 I can say that you would be very unlikely to find any in Cairns. Sydney has a sheepskin shop in George St near Circular Quay. They have a website but it is really just a billboard.

Aussie Cruisers Posted January 1, 2009 #5 Share Posted January 1, 2009 Do you mean Ugg Boots, or actual clothes? I have seen plenty of boots (shuddering while I think of it) but things like jackets and the like are hard to find. The ones I have seen as faux sheepskin, with polyester "wool" and are horrible. Sorry, you may like them, but I have never seen an Aussie wear such a thing. Funny how the Americans have made Ugg boots popular. I remember as a kid with buying my Mum pink Ugg slippers from K-Mart for under $10. They were genuine wool, and great for home use only! Now, you pay through the nose for the same thing. Why were they once under $10 and you now pay up to a few hundred for them? POPULARITY! It is my understanding that the name "Ugg Boots" was registered by an American company a few years back, and they told us that we were not allowed to call them that name anymore. That is just wrong. WEll, the Ugg boots AND what they did are wrong. Shudder. I can't believe my Mum smiled and said she loved them! Good luck though! :)
10X Posted January 1, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted January 1, 2009 Do you mean Ugg Boots, or actual clothes? No Ugg boots for me, I'm 60 years old. I'm looking for some nice warm winter type clothing to bring home to wear in our cold winters. It was 8 degrees F last night; -13 C. The Sheepskin shop previously listed here shows some promise. I'll probably search in NZ too.

They specialise in sheep skin products of all types. There are a few stores up here in Brisbane but I can only find one in Sydney and none in Melbourne Skinnys Sheepskin Products & Souvenirs Shop 42A 427-441 Victoria Ave, Chatswood, NSW 2067 (02) 9419 5517 (02) 9410 0619 - Fax

Yes the Ugg boots are very popular...and well named (ugly). BUT they are also very warm I'm told. If you had 8o you were in a veritable heat wave over last week in Wisconsin. We had -8o and wind chill to -28o, IN DECEMBER!! We've already had nearly 40" of snow...and a usual winter here averages 50-60" and we've 3 months to go...unless it hangs on like last yr. thru much of Apr. (still had small snow piles under shaded areas...into June!) What with the Dec snow we had 110" or so records nearly all over the state! Sure am hoping it stays fairly slow on the snow for 2 wks.! We leave for Auckland on the 15th from O'HAre in Chicago! Have 1 day early arrival, just in case, am worrying if that's enough!:(

SunnyCoastCruiser Posted January 9, 2009 #13 Share Posted January 9, 2009 Napi's Mom. You'd be surprised how cold it can get here in Oz, even in Queensland which has a sub-tropical climate. We don't really have central heating up here, so when we have a cold winter (like last year), we sit around a tiny, ineffective electric heater with ten layers of clothing, trying to keep warm. These days, air conditioning is becoming more common in people's homes, so it makes sense to get reverse cycle for both winter as well as our sticky, stifling, humid summers.
