What's the deal with the stingrays?

Ok...so what's the deal with all the excursions involving this stingray place?

I went swimming with stingrays on a previous cruise and care nothing about doing it again.

Anyone got any suggestions on something else to do besides visit the stingrays?!?!

We were thinking about going to Eden Rock but is it a place where you could spend your whole day there and not get bored? I like the idea of a beach but I'm going to a beach at a different port and don't want to do the same thing in two different places. Don't really care to shop all that much either!

Any ideas would be great!

Thanks

If you did the stingrays someplace like the Bahamas where they are in a pen and you get in the pen with them this is very different. Having seen the stingray excursion in places like Blackbeards Cay in Nassau it is like apples and oranges.

They are wild, they are not in pens. They take the boat to a sand bar and the stingrays just come. It is quite thrilling to see actually. I don't think one can say they have snorkel or swam with stingrays unless they have done this type of excursion. Many trips will include other fabulous snorkel spots as well.

Eden Rock is very nice and you can definitely make a day of it. There is a small, rocky beach area and steps that lead into the water and some really fantastic shore snorkeling. The reef is extensive and you can really spend all day snorkeling there and see new things all day. There is also a bar/restaurant there and you can get lunch/drinks if you want.

We liked Rum Point, you can get there by cab.

Just keep in mind that a taxi to Rum Point is very expensive, about $80 US each way, and it takes about 45 minutes to get there from the port area. There will also not be any taxis waiting around there for the return trip, so you'll need to prearrange that.

Your better bet for a visit to Rum Point is to either rent a car or take one of the excursions that includes a stop there.

While Rum point is nice as a previous person wrote , its more like an hour ride depending on the time of day and it is a beach bar with food ,on the beach. It is more relaxing there if you are a resident and have a boat to relax on. Snorkeling there from shore is a waste although they have excursions by boat to the reef. Turtle farm is interesting for a short period but quickly gets old. There are turtles... Only other good part to the turtle farm is you can swim in the pool which has a glass divider and there are fish and sharks on the other side. Again, its neat but only short lived. Oh yeah, and its expensive.

Shops in town if you want, food and drink. Eden rock is right where you get off the ships and there is some good snorkeling there up close to shore and if you swim out a bit is great. Stingray city is great but you are only there a short time. icon7.gif
