place to stay in tuscany

Recommended Posts

Where is the best place to stay in tuscany that is convenient to travel to other hill towns and florence. We want someplace that is pretty close to most of the scenic spots.

We spent 4 nights in Florence post cruise in October (within easy walking distance of Firenze SMN and 'bus terminals'. Trains or buses will get you to any of the areas around Florence. We spent a day in Sienna, visited hill towns around the city. Highliht was an all day wine tour of Chianti (well worth the expense.) Florence is a very convenient hub for any place around that area.

I concur that Florence is best for public transportation connections. If you are planning to rent a car, Florence would be the worst due to the traffic congestion there!

If you want to be centrally based for all Tuscany and sample the local culture try this place. We stayed there in August last year and I can't praise it enough.

It also has fab reviews on Tripadvisor. You will need a car but you can also easily drive to the local train station and be at numerous locations within 30 minutes.

We found this charming B&B. Its a 14thh century mill converted to a B&B.

Its 5km east of Florence, near Fiesole. the local bus to Florence is at the end of the street. You can leave your car here for Florence, yet avoid city traffic if going elsewhere in Tuscany

It really depends if you plan on renting a car. As the OP said, you do NOT want a car in Florence. Many of the hills towns are best reached by bus, not train because the train stations are well away from the centers. Having done both, I would recommend a car and that you stay in accomodation in the country. Last summer we trained to Florence, and then rented a car when we wanted to leave. We stayed in an agritourism just outside Siena and toured the hill towns each day.

Hi Carol4158. This agriturismo looks wonderful. Were there any children there when you visited? Thanks! Pam

Hi Pam

There were some children at the accommodation. They ranged from about three years to young teens.

The 'room' we were given was actually two floors. Our bedroom and bathroom were upstairs but the downstairs had a lounge area and two small single beds, so it would be ideal for a family. The pool is fantastic but has no lifeguards so you would have to be totally responsible for your children if they were around it. There is also plenty of green space for them to play.

David, the owner, serves a three course meal each night (optional). It is served on the outside terrace and it was fun watching the children play together between courses.

It's a fantastic location - very isolated but near enough to tour Tuscany at your own pace. We only stayed a few nights and wish we had planned to stay longer.

Carol

Tuscany is a fairly large area in itself, but I would check out places in Siena as it would offer more places than some of the smaller hill towns.Greve would be another one,but on the smaller side.As other[s have said Florence, but it is not the Tuscany of the pictures:) Hare is a lionk for some ideas...Tuscany-Villas.net / Tuscany private Villa to rent direct from Owners
