Port, starboard, formal nights, and more

I must say the washrooms were a highlight of my trip to Monaco as well.

Sure wish they hadn't made me check my camera.

For those planning a visit to Monte Carlo I would just like to point out that you need your passport to enterthe casino. There is also a charge of 10 euros. I can now say I have been there and done that but it is unlikely I would do it again, perhaps if I was going to be there at night time then I would change my mind.

Next to the Monte Carlo casino is the American casino....there is no charge to go in here and they have the same toilets in the washroom, so if this is what you want to see then this location is a better choice, although you still have to check your camera.

They truly are something. When I was there in 2005 with my mother she used the facilities but did not notice the special toilet. I made her go back and try again LOL She was glad she did!

Rochelle - I probably would have been like your mother – flush & go. But the person ahead of me was coming out of the stall when she just happened to turn around. She literally gasped WOW & went back in to have another flush. That was my cue to have a look before I exited. :D:D

Requirements may have changed but we didn’t need to show passports or pay to enter in ’07. But then again, we didn’t go into the gaming halls or behind the "velvet ropes". We visited the atrium, the auditorium & of course les toilettes.

OK. I can't stand it. Is anybody going to tell all about what's so special about the toilets?

I mean, what if I never get there??? I could die not knowing. You'd want me to rest in peace, wouldn't you?

LOL, part of the joy lies in the discovery! It wouldn't be as much fun if you knew what to expect, now would it? So the easy solution is to start planning a cruise to Monaco!! :D:D

Barcelona is a beautiful city. But...beware of the pickpockets. They'll prey on men & women. One story in a popular budget travel magazine says that tourists there knew they'd be targeted so they purchased six cheap wallets and filled them with play money. At the end of their time in Barcelona, five of the fake wallets had been pilfered. Forewarned is forearmed. That said, use under-clothes money belts and dont take too much with you.

Each stall has a Personal Attendant who flushes for you.:)

OK, le Casino entrance, at night (from in front - photos OK)

When you visit the Casino you have to show your passport - which will then be photo-copied - and you have to hand in your camera before entering the great Belle Epoque building, designed by Charles Garnier, who designed the Paris Opera House. There is a charge for entering but it's well worth it to see the grandeur within. Monaco citizens, called Monegasques - are not permitted to enter the casino. Monaco residents (there is a difference) are.

And the entrance (from up close) - photos not permitted!

We are doing the same cruise as you are, just a bit earlier. I did some research on this same issue and what I heard from people who did it this past summer, port or starboard are about 50/50 because of the itinerary. One 10 days you're better off on one side, but the second 10 days the other side.

Most Alaska cruises go the same direction due to tides, currents, etc. so one side is almost always better, but I gather with European/Mediterranean cruises it can be different sides for different itineraries and cities, and you never know for sure how you'll be "parked" so that could make a difference even on the same itinerary.

If you wanted to you could try to get them to switch your cabin between two legs of the cruise so you would be on the "better" side both legs. We considered that but decided it wasn't worth packing and moving everything, we'd just go on an upper deck if there were things we wanted to see and we were on the wrong side for it. I really enjoy being able to sit on my own balcony and watch the scenery though.

Whichever side of the ship you end up on I'm sure you'll have a great time! :D

Not this year. :( I'm on the Rotterdam in October. :)

My older grandgirl has decided she would like me to take her to Europe spring '10, so that books me solid until fall '10.

Hope the knees hold out!
