TheMermaid Posted January 19, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2009 Our daughter is turning 5 while we are in Barbados. She loves the beaac hbut isn't a great swimmer. We would like to go somewhere that has a wonderful beach with umbrellas and amentities. Any suggestions? Caribbeean T&L Mag gave thumbs up to Sandy Lane Beach. Has anyone been there? Jayhawk Posted January 19, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2009 We have one that turns five literally 5 days before so I'm interested in the answer as well!
TheMermaid Posted January 20, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted January 20, 2009 Jayhawk, sandy Lane Beach comes highly recommended. We are thinking of spending the morning at Paynes Bay so Dad and I can do a little snorkeling and then taking off to Sandy Lane for the rest of the day for our daughter to play on the beach and in the water where there are restrooms and showers and food. If someone has a better plan, please throw it out here.
NCSunshine Posted January 21, 2009 #4 Share Posted January 21, 2009 if I remember correctly, there are no public washrooms or restaurants at the beach in front of Sandy Lane hotel. you would have to be staying at the hotel to use any of their facilities. You may want to go to Accra Beach on the south coast. There are places public washrooms and places to eat as well as people who have unbrellas and chairs for rental. TheMermaid Posted January 21, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted January 21, 2009 Is Sandy Lane where the Lobster Alive is? We were planning on renting chairs from them and using their facilities. Do I have the wrong beach? Ack! I'm very confused.
Aplmac Posted January 21, 2009 #6 Share Posted January 21, 2009 Is Sandy Lane where the Lobster Alive is? ===> Nooooo.. We were planning on renting chairs from them and using their facilities. Do I have the wrong beach? ===> Yeeeees! Ack! I'm very confused. ===> Yes. You need to find a map! Lobster Alive is on Carlisle Bay where indeed you can rent chairs and an umbrella ..................... Sandy Lane's awfully snooty and exclusive: frankly, they don't want you there although you can walk North from Paynes Bay, about quarter-mile along the coastline until you get there. A Coke will cost you something like $100 -but never mind, it's only money!! :D:D
TheMermaid Posted January 21, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted January 21, 2009 OKay, so Sandy Lane is history since I don't want to dip into my child's college fund to buy beverages. Where do I want to go? Have you been to Lobster Alive? I've heard it's much less hectic where ever their chairs and umbrellas are than anywhere else on the beach. Of course this may be a tawdry lie to lure me into their lobster shack to pay $60 for a lobster. There lobsters are more than the cruise.

Where do I want to go? ===> Accra/Rockley is probably your best bet.. Have you been to Lobster Alive? ===> I live here ;) I've heard it's much less hectic where ever their chairs and umbrellas are than anywhere else on the beach. ===> Arty is a laid-back Aussie. Of course this may be a tawdry lie to lure me into their lobster shack to pay $60 for a lobster. ===> Alternative seafoods on their menu There lobsters are more than the cruise. ===> Like I said..it's only money! :D Accra or Rockley as it's more correctly known is a better, more 'glam' bet that Lobster Alive even though the beaches(sand) themselves are about equal in quality. Lobster Alive(Carlisle Bay beach) is about 2 miles long, so you can get away from things if you need to. Accra Beach is probably no more than quarter mile long, but what a quarter mile! Pros and cons! If you want to be close to the ship, do Lobster Alive...it's 5-10 mins. away depending on the trafffic. Accra/Rockley is about 15 mins away...maybe 20 if traffic is tight going back to the ship at 4 p.m. There are several/many threads right here on this first Barbados page, devoted to both popular locations. Suggest you start looking thru them. Lotsa pictures too. This is Accra ..and those are your footprints!

By the way on Accra which place do you think for lunch? ===> I'd do Chefette, across the street.. Also great photo's again Thanks I was just messaging with Katybean via the Facebook chat thing, and she thanked me for recommending Accra, so it must be OK Eating there -or neaby- is no problem. Right across the street is the fast food place, with decent Pizza but there are also various mini-bars and snack-shacks close to the beach itself, between the trees. You won't starve, and knowing you dehydration is a very remote possibility. ;) ____________________________________ The local light lager is called Banks you can drink it like water almost..it's meant to be refreshing and that makes the perfect excuse for downing a few..dozen :D

Aplmac Posted January 23, 2009 #12 Share Posted January 23, 2009 Thanks again for info. ===> You're welcome You are right about having a drink had a couple of Rumpunch off the beach shacks last year and they blew my head off . Locals don't drink that stuff. We sell it to the tourists and then watch them stagger around. :D Add LOTS of ice to the rum punch. Helps to dilute it..;) Little known fact is that 'better grade' Rum Punch is made with white rum, not brown (easier on the stomach too) ________________________________________ The stuff Carnival gave me in this funnel wasn't cute either, if that makes you feel any better! .
