kyrie..the thing is the company is protected by only hiring independent contractors. The company is not responsible for non employees actions or their lack of it.

I don't think the Supreme Court has heard the case yet, though one is pending on this very issue.

wow the outcome should be very interesting, hope someone posts it when it's all decided.

Oh btw alpha I love your quote about well behaved women;)

If the person in that case is found responsible, it will keep people from trying to help others.

As a paramedic I don't have a "duty to act" when passing an accident, etc.... and when I hear stuff like the case in question, I question when I ever would act.

You know one comment really grated on my nerves, about the doctors being third rate because they are foreign.

I cannot tell you how many of the excellent doctors I've met that are "foreign" or from other countries, I think you'll find a great number of specialists in this country do not come from here. I'm a nurse and have worked in hospitals about 16 years, so I know from first hand experience.

Keep your hate speech to yourself, whether you are aware of it or not, it IS hateful to say someone is not up to par because they don't come from your country.

My opinion, like it or not.

But you would Jakie, because face it, your in the helping profession. Not one of us could truly walk away from a person in need, it makes us special, and the blessing we get from seeing a life saved or changed because of us really far outweighs the bad things.

well...I never stop at accident scenes, and I would only help if it were something where my actions would make a difference, like someone choking or a kid that was hurt. Other than that, I stay away....

I agree! Comments like that are just ignorant to say the least.

My family practitioner worked on several cruiselines (although not on Carnival) before she opened her own practice here in Calif.

Oh and believe it or not she is an American:)

so my friend on deck was so impressed with the care he took the time to run down 6 flights of steps and across the boat to find me ? or he is a liar? Sorry to tell you Carnival got this wrong. I like the company and have cruised 5 times with them. They do a lot of things right, but this wasnt it. There is NO excuse not to have AEDs posted throughout the ship. You could probably not draw up a better scenario for sudden death then to place a weekend warrior on a hot deck and let them exercise. There is a reason that there are AED devices in casinos, airports, public buildings and gymnasiums etc. thoughout the USA. Is there a reason there are none on a cruise ship with 2500 people??

I don't think you are wrong..it would be nice to have the AED devices on board...I just wonder do you find them in other resorts/hotels???

I'm not trying to be snarky...this is a legitimate question. I will take your word that airports, public buildings (???) and gyms as well as casinos have them because I wouldn't know if they did or didn't.

This entire thread is just a litany of ignorance. Just more examples of people not knowing what they are buying and blaming anyone else for their own errors. No different than someone buying a diesel engined car and putting GAS in it. No clue of what they bought.

Same as complaints about missed ports.

What people SHOULD know:

No law says there must be a Doctor on board for passengers. Or even a nurse!

No cruiseline hires Doctors. All are independent contractors.

Ships infirmaries are not OR's or ER's

WE ALL sail at our OWN health risk! AND WE ARE THE ONLY RESPONSIBLE PARTY!

ALL things considered, they all, Carnival included, to a terrific job.

Visit the infirmary on your next cruise. It WILL be busy! It always is!

As a paramedic, what do you think if cruise lines employed them? After a bad accident that my BIL suffered a few years ago on the Radiance, I always thought there could be a place for a couple teams. Maybe 12 hrs on, 12 off. Maybe pay them $2500 each for a 1 week working vacation. That would cost the passengers less than $4 each. I'd pay my $4 to know that someone who really cared would respond immediately and know what to do if I were to have a problem.

I say that because of what I witnessed on the Radiance.

Here's my review of it.

You with 2 POSTS are wrong... my wife (of many years) pointed out the device to me the day before in that area as we were talking about it. She has worked in the ER and presently is the nurse in charge of day surgery at a hospital. We saw at LEAST 4 of them throughout the ship and except for the one on the basketball deck we were not looking for them. It would stupid to think they would not be around... and for this case more than one person has stated they saw him being shocked.

So, let's take all of the exercise equipment off the ships unless it is winter time or it is located inside, in a climate controlled room, with a doctor present with an AED inhand. And while we are at it, just ditch the Riviera Deck and make it a fully staffed hospital, complete with MRI, CT, OB/GYN, Neurosurgeon, Heart Surgeon, Cancer specialist, Physical Therapists, and a full trama ER.

Oh wait, that's overkill? Then WHY are you people STILL going on about this? I mean FFS, the OP DID NOT have first hand info, and you yourself had to be brought to the scene. Do you KNOW FOR SURE how long it took your friend to come and get you? Did he have a stopwatch going?

I wasn't ANYWHERE near the incident, much less on the ship, but I am sure that they did the best they could. Now, until someone can come forward with firsthand info, from the time of the incident until the time the ship's doctor showed up, AND HAD A STOPWATCH IN HAND, leave it be!

It is RIDICULOUS nonsense like this that make me want to quit reading this forum......

No it isn't. Depending on the age of the man, heart disease is #1, then at another age replaced by lung cancer, with colon cancer creeping up there. Prostate cancer is found in many dead men, but is not the number 1 cause of killing them...Just my $0.02

You are so correct!!! Heart disease is the number one cause of death in men, followed closely by all cancers grouped together.

As for Carnival's response in the case of this young man's death, it does sound as if it could have been handled better. Since this is a floating city, it would seem that AEDs should be strategically located throughout the ship including areas of strenous exercise such as the basketball court. It would even be great if some of the staff would learn to use them. Automatic AEDs are extremely easy to use....They give voice instructions thoughout the entire procedure and all one has to do is follow the instructions. They are becoming common place in malls, stores, and the small community college in which I work.

Oh that's just gross....I'm sorry that happened to your friend. It had to hurt like heck...

Aside from the poor medical response, what is it with these ships and the slippery areas??? I can't tell you how many times, on various lines I have seen people fall due to how slick the surfaces are in some areas. You would think when building the latest ships, they'd have done the flooring differently surrounding the pools/hot tubs and spa areas, knowing how people are constantly having their feet go out from under them.

ESPECIALLY dangerous is wearing the rubber flip-flops in the slick areas.

:o {sorry to hijack}

Good Lord.

Are you people sure you were on the same ship???

Just an observation...isn't it amazing how different the stories come out between different posters on the same ships????

Dang!

Well, I certainly hope the accurate versions are the ones who said the response time was quick and the post above.

well if there are AEDs on the boat i never saw one. And i went out of my way to look for them sunday night. I did call Carnival and asked them that question. They assured me they will mail me a letter with the answer. I will see how fast that gets to me since noone in "guest relations" new anything about them being on the boats. I was impressed that the guy i talked to knew what they were however. Quite frankly I am glad that most of you think it is a nonissue. Good luck on your cruises. I wish you good health.

H,

Yes, many public places in the US now have AED's. They know they will be sued if someone has a HA and they don't have a device handy to be used and someone trained to use it. That is the litigious state of the US today. Whoever has some money is at fault. That fact that the victim is morbidly obese does not count. Or has a terrible family history of cardiac problems [i do] The mall, store, office, HAS money, sue them. And if the fat ass victim dies, the suit is filed no matter what.

I recently read about 2 coworkers in Ca.? were in a crash on the way to work. One was thrown clear, the other was stuck in the BURNING car. But was pulled out by their coworker. The coworker saved her from a certain fiery death and did not do medical treatment on her, [which a "Good Samaritan" is not allowed to do] But the victim was parallelized as a result of the crash or rescue. Even tho there is a "Good Samaritan" law to protect the non medical rescuer, the 'heroine' was found responsible for the injuries. Insanity!!

So far the insanity has not spread to cruise ships.

Jakie I totally agree, I don't stop with accidents either, there was a bunch of people trying "death by car" instead of HIV and they totally ruined the good samaritans in our area, MANY exposed to HIV because they stopped to help. I do carry a one way air valve and rubber gloves in my car, and would use them if I happened on someone that wasn't recieving help already.

But on the same token I could not watch someone have a heart attack, or a kid or adult for that matter with an injury and not stop and help.

Even BLS gives people circulation, I admit, not much, but any is better than not at all. But you know all this. So don't get me wrong I don't chase ambulances, but if something happens before my eyes, I could never walk away.

I am with you on this one Halos. It also seems that the thread has turned from they took their sweet time, to there weren't any AED on board for anyone to use. Seems like a dog chasing its tail.
