Ranch steak?

Recommended Posts

On our cruise in January on the Nordic Empress, our waiter admitted, sheepishly that the Ranch Steak is a shoulder steak.....guess that explains just why it is tough most of the time, huh? By the way....for those he served it to at our table, he made apologies when setting it in front of them .... they KNOW it's going to be bad!

For some reason, my children (10 & 12) also loved it and had one between them almost every night. I too tasted it for the experience.

The positive worst was the Kraft-shrimp dinner combo - now that was gross - my kids wouldn't even touch that one!! Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Bottom line....I'm not cooking, I'm not washing, I'm not cleaning, I am drinking, I am being served and I am conversing....already the food is wonderful and the service great!!

BigDave, I guess I'm in the clear then! I've sailed AND smuggled twice, but have never been caught.

We'll see if luck holds out, as I'm sailing next month and I've already making my smuggling plans!!!

That sounds interesting Can you elaborate? Was it shrimp with velveeta cheese sauce?

It was something with shrimp and orange powder on top of it like the orange powder we put on Kraft dinner - it was absolutely awful - we had it on the Brilliance in March (Stretch's Bar Crawler cruise) I somehow doubt it will ever see a plate again as it did not appear to be a hit with too many people!! The good part was we had a lot of room for dessert

Anyone familiar with Market Day? We've been ordering and eating Ranch Steaks from them for years, and they're a pretty basic steak. It says they're similar to Sirloin in the description. Is this the same thing? 2 of my kids love steak, and if it's the same, I'm sure will eat it nearly every night. Sounds like the kids like it from above comments!

I guess it's the luck of the draw. Had that steak twice on the last cruise on Serenade.......a little A-1 and it was fine. I always did however, combine the Ranch Steak with another entree.
I'm always amazed that cruising attracts such connoisseurs.....lol. You might think they have dined at Zagaat's top 100 restaurants.

It is luck of the draw when it comes to the Ranch Steak. It was on the buffet every night both times we were aboard the Monarch. If you are careful, you can find a good piece that is tender. However, the steaks come in odd shapes and sizes, which I would think suggests they are not from a "standard" part of the cow when it comes to cuts. Perhaps from a poor quality roast?

What I don't understand is that they had a wonderful NY strip on the lunch buffet, but served Ranch Steak for dinner. They also offer the NY strip through room service, but it's also not on the buffet at dinner. Wouldn't the Ranch steak be more appropriate at lunch than at dinner? Save the good stuff for dinner!

Cruz-Aholic - I guess I am tempting fate once more. We will be on Rhapsody 5/30 and my old friend "Ranch Steak" will be dining with me each night. Everytime I try to get out, it pulls me back in. Oh, the humanity....

I was looking forward to a steak & lobster on lobster night.
Please don't tell me that that they've cut back / switched the salmon with Catfish

A&G 2Cruise Lovers: They will generally substiute the Salmon with whatever they catch that day - could be Catfish, Cod, Muttonfish, etc. A lot of the amateur fishermen on board will pool their catches and then offer it at lunch as the "Catch of the day".
Re: "Steak & Lobster" night. Just do what a lot of other people are doing now.
They smuggle in their own prime "Alberta Beef" then BBQ it exactly to their liking on their balconies, and have the steward serve it up just when the lobster is served.
That way, their is nothing to complain about. (well at least for you, anyway)

Ranch Steaks really are not that bad!

Why do I have a continued compulsion to defend RCI over the Ranch Cut Steak? The Ranch Steaks I have eaten are tasty and jucy - done medium.

Here is a TELL ALL web site about the Ranch Steak - what type of cut, menu and cooking suggestions, etc.

Computergeek: Hmmm, your link didn't work (for me, anyway). Try this one:
http://www.rdranch.com/dsp/dsp_locationContent.cfm?locationId=1202
Interesting info there, by the way!
I am in no position to comment on this particular cut of meat, but I will say, if you like it done to 'Medium', ...well...
you've definately 'killed it', and it will have absolutley no chance of 'fighting back'.
There's only one way to cook steak - "Rare"!

We were also dissapointed with the food at Chops. Portifino's food wasn't exactly Italian. Neither is most stuff I find at "Italian" restaurants at home. But the food a Portifino's was really delicious.

My gif kitties have gone to cyber heaven so that dial up cruisers don't have a problem getting their posts read.
