Freeport Beaches Info

Thank you cherith & Johan & Sandra. I'm going on the Pride in Aug. & honestly was not thrilled at the prospect of a stop in Freeport. Decided to look on this board to see if there was anything that would peak my interest in this port....and you guys came through!

Last time there, many years ago, Freeport was an unplanned port on our cruise. I remember walking a loooooong road with our kids, seeing nothing, & finally hiring a van which only dropped us at a casino & a couple of shops - then, back to the ship.

These beaches listed seem great & will certainly be watching the boards for feedback from visitors. When you say the distance from downtown Freeport, is downtown where the ships dock? Are cabs generally a per person fee or per cab? Thanks for all your help. You guys are great!

The cruise ship terminal is a bit further out than the Airport or Down Town you will need to add about 10 mins driving time to get to the different beaches. I will list the closest 3 here the others are very nice but the Taxi drive will get far to expensive.

First there is Xanadu Beach next (almost the same driving distance) is Williams Town Beach if you go there there is a nice Rest/Bar called Bikini Bottom that opens up for lunch so you will be able to grab a snack and some drinks for yourself and kids. Also on the same beach there is a Rest/Bar located in the Island Seas Resort but it tends to be a bit pricy. about another 5 to 7 min drive from there is Coral Beach Hotel if you go there you can actully walk about 1.5 miles down the beach to the Our Lucaya Resort and across the street from there is Port Lucaya where you will find tones of shopping food and drinks.

I hope this info helps you and your kids enjoy your stay here on Grand Bahama.

Does anyone know if there are day passes available for Our Lucaya Resort? We are looking for a beach with chairs, food and drinks available as close to the cruise ship as possible. I am also interested in shopping options near-by. Also, how do you get a cab for the ride back to the cruise ship? Thank you so much everyone for all the GREAT info here! How did we ever travel before there were forums and great websites like this!?! :)

People have reported day passes at around $20pp... may not be available during spring break time. Cab are in abundance and to make sure you have a "real" one go to the front of the Isle of Capri Casino (ask anyone) and you will find a line of taxis. Shopping/food/bars are all within easy walking distance of each other.

Don't really care about white sand and blue water. We like to explore seculed beach and do some shelling..Any hints

If you go the other way from the pier, out to Pinder's Point, you'll find Lovers Beach, where you can find lots of shells and especially sea glass. It's not secluded per se, but we've never been on it when anyone else was there. It's a bit rocky, nothing like the beaches at the East end of the island, but close to the pier and you can find some fun things there.

The other good beaches for shelling are out East toward Gold Rock Beach and beyond, though you can go to Fortune Beach by the Wyndham and find some too. Barbary Beach is also a good bet - out East but much closer than Gold Rock - you'll likely find nobody else out there, and it's do-able in a day from the cruise pier.

I just want to say "Thanks!" :) for this great info... it's a shame how something like this gets lost on these forums. The only thing missing is estimated cab fare from the port!

It depends, if you get a "shared" cab/van it is $5 pp (may have gone to $7) each way. A taxi for yourself/family is closer to $40-50 each way as they want to fill it with as many as they can and will charge more for less people.

Isle of Capri as the casino is no more, It's Treasure Bay. I think it is still $20 to use the pools, chairs, bathrooms. Will be there May 12, let you know.

All this info has been great.

I'm torn between Deadman's Reef, Junkanoo Beach and maybe now Our Lucaya because of the location to shops and food.

Some in my group want to snorkel, some shop, some just relax by the beach and/or pools. We'll have 5 18-21 year old guys with us. What would be our best choice? I'm thinking either Deadman's Reef or Junkanoo and back to Lucaya for shopping... is this dooable? We will be in port from 8:00 - 6:00.

Thanks!

Thank you for the great information! I just bookmarked this post.

My husband and I really want to go to Gold Rock Beach and Dead Man's Reef. We want to rent a car, but it looks like only one car rental place is actually based at the port and they don't have a website. IF we do get to rent a car and we're the first ones off the ship in the morning, do you think we can manage to accomplish everything we want to do? FYI: I've looked at the tidal charts and tide will be going out in the AM, low tide around noon, and coming in during the late afternoon.

Deadman's Reef is towards the West End and Gold Rock Beach is towards the East End. I honestly would pick one or the other... Please remember that you will be driving on the left... and out in the "country". The island is about 100 miles long so things can be a big away from each other.

So do you have to take a taxi or can you walk to some of the beaches?

At the port/pier you can "walk" (http://g.co/maps/2x4tq) over to a beach... would not recommend swimming though as Pier One (restaurant) "feeds" sharks every day and they like to hang out. Not really a tourist area. As for anyplace that has a beach/shops/etc you will need a cab to get there. Our Lucaya is the most common destination and is $5pp each way in a shared cab (van).
