If I want a outside cabin is there any reason I want one of the more expensive outside cabins than the less expensive outside cabins? Why is Empress more expensive than Riviera? Is it location only?

Yes! The higher you go or the more midship the cabin is located the more expensive the cabin is. If you were looking at a balcony cabin the size of the balcony also plays a part in cost too. Carnival has restructured their pricing of cabins to reflect higher costs for the more "desirable" locations. :)

Yes, location only is what makes room within one category more expensive... Now the middle of the ship is pricier than the forward or aft cabins...

We were just on Empress and did a whole lot less walking, very convenient I have to admit. We were exactly mid ship. Got lucky.
