snorkeling

I've not been to Cemetery Beach but have done shore snorkeling at Eden rock and it is way better than Trunk Bay. You do have to swim out a little ways to get over the reef. If you go there be sure to ask someone where you stop to point out the reef areas relative to the red buoys you see from shore.

So if you've never snorkeled before where would you reccomend?

Is Eden Rock to dangerous for beginners? We are mid forties and haven't been swimming recently, plus we want to take pictures. Once you swim past the reef, is it 35 feet deep?

We have snorkeled Eden Rock several times. It's a very easy walk from the tenders. Normally its very smooth, it depends on the wind direction. You enter the water via a series of stone steps right next to the Paradise Bar. Pictures should be good if its a bright sunny day and you have a good camera. The coral has taken a beating but the fish colors are wonderful. The water depth is probably up to 35 feet deep in places.

At Eden rock you need to swim out quite a ways and the water is not shallow. If you're first time snorkelers and also first time to Cayman I'd recommend taking one of the Sting Ray City excursions - most include a stop at the Sting Ray City sand bar where the water is waist deep and a stop at one (or maybe even two) reef areas for snorkeling. They'll have all the equipment and a staff to help out first time snorkelers with some basic instruction, and a little help if necessary, which I don't think you'll find at Eden Rock.

Most people on these boards think the privately booked excursions through Captain Marvins or Captain Bryan or similar companies are the best although many enjoy the cruise line sponsored excursions as well even if they are a bit more crowded.

If you have never snorkeled before and especially if your swimming skills are rusty I'd suggest an excursion. The less expensive of these generally have two stops just off shore, downtown. One a reef in about 12 - 15 ' and the other a sunken ship in slightly deeper water. Regardless of the excursion you'll have the benefit of some oversight while you brush up on your swimming skills and learn to snorkel.
