just like i figured. apple mac, is on the antigua forum every time a tiny bit of bad news about antigua is mentioned offering opinion. As expected, not a peep on this one.

Seems like it's not just the bajan press who are quiet on all the tourism crime.

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Bajan%20media%20ignores%20attack%20women/1368249/story.html

I am from Antigua and have been to Barbados dozens of times. I have plenty to comment on Barbados but I will let cruisers do that. Why is aplmac all over the Antigua site commenting on things when they are sour? So nasty and wrong. I am tired of it and will start hanging out on this forum giving some balance to this thing if need be.

that way we can point out ways to improve our islands.

- if we can get the right ppl to police beaches, solve crimes, prevent crimes, fix pot-holes,etc.

It would be fairly easy to set up a baiting situation to catch the Long Beach perpetrator,

but local authorities don't do much real sleuthing

and that is pretty much a regional mindset, not my island or yours.

It's a case of will power, and it simply isn't there..

Vegas Man you make a very good point! I do understand Antiguan's frustration. These islands thrive on tourism and I have never understood why Aplmac felt so inclined to post a huge posting (bold lettering) on an incident that happened in Antigua, without any further explanation. I had my suspicion as to why he did that.

I read what you posted-thank you.

Can I ask what was the incident last year??

This same publication as listed by the OP has written that there were two other serious attacks involving Ottawa residents in the Long Beach, Bermuda area at different times within the last year. It begs the question that if three incidents happened in the last year to persons from the same Canadian city, what other numbers are there that are not being reported? One does have to be careful whatever island is involved.

Yep..neither would I and I live here.

You see, when we give advice for you guys to go places like Accra ,Crane, etc

and we don't mention lonely places like Long Bay

-maybe we have a reason?

But no..many tourists have this contrived scenario in their heads they just have to play out.

They're walking down this beautiful beach, which they have all to themselves.

They turn and kiss... he kneels to propose... I start to cry..boohoo..ohGod this is sooo romantic

Oh puhleease.

Any beach that lonely ..is lonely for a reason duh.

Stick to the tried and true? Please?

Thank you

Tonight's TV news on the island.

The usual.

After the horse has bolted, politicians spring into action on TV with ideas to make the area safer.

I'm impressed. ;)

I'm still not going there -are you?

Things happen everywhere. If everyone knew all the horrible horrible things that happen in orlando ,florida they would never want to see Mickey Mouse.

Long Bay is it close to crane?Isn't there a hotel there?

They should have security on the beaches.

But people do need to be careful ANYWHERE!

But people do need to be careful ANYWHERE!

Security at all beaches is a nice dream.

Police provide security at popular beaches where they get seen.;)

They're not going to patrol lonely beaches.

You are right... parts of Orlando are very dangerous. (I still love visiting the mouse!)

I believe you will see elevated crime where there is significant poverty in certain areas.

On one hand, we have the tourists/cruise passengers spending $$$$ vs. some very poor people living on an island. The gap is too wide. Sad.:(

Local TV News...five minutes ago reports that

7 persons have now been interviewed with regard to this attack.

Seems they are taking it seriously.

A reward of Bds.$10,000 is soon to be offered

which may get someone to rat on the perp.

Other measures, too are being taken island-wide

to keep things civil.

In researching the different ports for our visit, St. Martin still sounds like the island with the most crime.

Interesting! I wouldn't have thought that!

Given your spelling, you would seem to indicate the French side of the island - St.Martin.

The Dutch side is spelled Sint Maarten...or St.Maarten

Are you referring to both sides of the island, or to any one side??

I ask because we'll be there soon, and this stuff is handy to know.

I recall when there previously, being warned about bag-snatchings

but geeez that happens everywhere..

we sat at a sidewalk bistro enjoyed a chocolate crepe and a Coke.

You're right...I was referring Sint Maarten. There seem to be significant warnings re: break-ins for tourists who are staying on the island + who have rented a car & are out in the evening. Cruise passengers are usually long gone by evening.

You really take wonderful photos.. chocolate crepe sitting at a cafe...:D

sounds great!

aplmac, what's your honest opinion of Folkestone Park? Is it OK?

Folkestone Park is Governmentally-run for the people of Barbados.

It's a seaside public park of Barbados standards.

It's not particularly a tourism destination, per se.

It's a bit on the tacky side(just great for locals)

and the only reason anyone here recommends Folkestone

is for the snorkelling immediately offshore

coz it sure ain't for the marginal beach!

If you're a total snorkelling freak doing U/W photog. give it a go

but don't expect Sandy Lane or Accra beach conditions.

I find it tacky, to be honest but if you like 'doing the local thing' you'll find it okay.

IF Government knew how popular it could be they'd zoom things up, but...

It was in my local paper today that this woman passed away due to her injuries. Sad :(
And the reward on the island is now up to Bds.$20,000.

They'll catch the bastard, some weeks down the trail.

No consolation to the dear lady now deceased of course

but maybe this whole awful incident will serve as a security wake-up call for Barbados

Simply awful.:(
