Alaskan Railroad reservations

How far in advance should one book for the Anchorage to Whittier train? I am sailing on the 15th of August and was wondering how late I can safely wait to reserve this. (FWIW, I read back through about 13 pages on this forum and couldn't find anything.)

We booked about two weeks before the cruise with no problems. I have also booked a day in advance. That's for the ARR and not the cruise line train.

We were told by AK Rail that they almost never fill up with possible exception of Wednesdays, and therefore we were safe to wait until that day to book and that way we could gauge the weather better.

It does sell out, so you might want to give them an occasional call on the loads for your particular train, then book when filling up?
