MSC Fantasia to host G8 leaders

It’s official: MSC Fantasia has been tapped to accommodate leaders for the 2009 Group of Eight summit in Sardinia -- which means it’s possible US President Obama may be among the presidents and prime ministers aboard MSC Cruises’ newest ship. G8 leaders will gather in the Sardinian archipelago of La Maddalena July 8 to 10. France, the United States and Russia are represented by their heads of state, while the UK, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada are represented by their respective heads of government.

The use of MSC Fantasia is part of the G8 commitment to a zero environmental impact summit.

La Maddelena is comprised of 60 mostly unihabited islands which retain a natural environment that serves as a magnet for sailors, scientists and naturalists.

During the summit, a range of measures will be taken to safeguard the environment. Among them is the use of MSC Fantasia, which earned ‘Six Golden Pearls’ from Bureau Veritas, confirming compliance with the highest environmental, health and safety standards.

The ship’s environmental components range from technology to cut electricity consumption in the staterooms and public areas to advanced wastewater treatment, waste recycling and non-toxic hull coating.

The precise location where the ship will moor for the summit remains to be decided. The area between La Maddalena and the island of Santo Stefano is being surveyed for the purpose
