Wheelchair/scooter accessible transportation?

Another question for the Bermuda experts. I appreciate all of the great info you've been able to give me so far. Now for another one.

The majority of our group will be traveling around Bermuda on rented scooters. However, there are 15 of us total and 7 of the group won't be renting scooters. They will be using the buses, ferries, etc. My dad is one of those and he uses an electric scooter to get around in. He's not confined to the scooter...he can get off and walk short distances, climb steps, etc. And, the scooter isn't one of those huge ones. It can easily be picked up by two people and actually breaks down into a several pieces if absolutely necessary.

So, my question is. What are the transportation options available for taking the scooter? I'm sure we'll go out to the dockyard area one day, and Hamilton another since were will be docked in St. George. Can the scooter be put on the buses? Dad can get off the scooter, board the bus, and sit in a regular seat(with no assistance)...but is there room to pick up the scooter and stick it somewhere on the bus? There would always be a couple people in our group with him that would handle the scooter...no help would be needed from the bus driver or anyone else...he wouldn't be doing this on his own. Or is a cab the only option (it will easily fit in the trunk of a cab). Also, I'm assuming that the ferry is HC accessible for the scooter?

Any input is great appreciated...thanks!

The Ferries are scooter accessible but not the bus(90% sure). He may be stuck with taxis...if the scooter can fit in the trunk.

The busses can get quite crowded depending on the time so anything extra is a problem. I have seen an area in the front of some of the busses where people can put folded umbrellas strollers but nothing else would fit. I really don't know what handicapped Bermudians do to get around if they can't afford cabs.

Thanks for the info. Okay, next question. How far is the ferry dock from where the Majesty will dock in St. George? I'm thinking that for moving around in St. George, a cab will be fine. And, he can take a cab to get from the ferry dock in Hamilton or the Dockyards to get to whereever we're going. Just wondering if he can ride his scooter to the ferry dock in St. George.

By the way Sid...that link is very intersting. Some religious sects are having a fit if the cruise ships want to keep their casino's open at night but obviously don't have an issue with HC having limited transportation, housing and even basic sidewalks that are HC friendly. I find it amazing where some people's sense of rightousness lies. :)

The ferry docks are all quite convenient and he can surely ride his scooter to the one in St. George. The one in Hamilton is right downtown close to Front Street, don't know what you might be doing there. Dockyard will also be easy to get around.

BDA does not seem to be very handicapped accessible. I could be wrong but I don't recall seeing any curb cuts in Hamilton. One year we sat with a lady who used a scooter but I don't remember her saying anything about problems but then I don't know what she did or where she went. Only problem for her that she mentioned was her battery died when she was out.

remember when Rosie wanted to visit Bermuda did she get an earful..they wound up canceling so much intolerance on this Island. Its not far from the cruise terminal to the ferry terminal...its a couple of blocks which can be riden...in the street....

Thanks you guys for all the great info. I was reading that disability page you linked to Sid and I just got very concerned. They are specific about HC scooters (even showed a picture of one) not being allowed in the streets. Of course, my dad would never attempt to ride his in the street for a long period of time...like from St. George to Hamilton! LOL But I was concerned about the sidewalk access getting from the ship to the ferry dock. Seems like it will be just fine.

Thanks again....you guys are the best.
