dan40 Posted March 28, 2009 #26 Share Posted March 28, 2009 There is no "TACKINESS" involved. The cruiseship is a floating resort. People carry all kinds of drinks from here to there ALL over the ship. From one bar to another, from a bar to the buffet, from a bar to the dining room, [we do that with pre dinner cocktails all the time.] from a bar to their room, from their room to the casino. NO one knows if the drink was bought or brought aboard. I'm anti-booze smuggling because I consider it dishonest to the cruiseline. But once it is onboard, who is drinking what, where is none of my business. Or anyone else's. Some bars on Carnival now have caf free diet Coke. I still bring it aboard so I have it in my room. During the day I'll drink plain diet if that's all they have, not at nite. Dan
Pegs222 Posted March 28, 2009 #27 Share Posted March 28, 2009 There are a lot of things that people do on a ship that are tacky, this is not one of them. What is the difference between bringing a bottle of wine or a can of soda?
Familyforce6 Posted March 28, 2009 #28 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I've been on 14 cruises and have never seen anyone bring a can of soda or beer into the dining room. I have seen people walk in with a glass of wine or a mixed drink. I personally think it's extremely tacky. If I had to have pop with my dinner, I'd buy one. If you can't afford a coke at dinner, you can't afford to be cruising.[/QUOTE] Lame comment. It's not a matter of not being able to afford it...it's just stupid if you have a cold case in your room already. I WAS going to bring a bottle of coke with me to dinner, but I have decided not too because I will be drinking enough of it the rest of the cruise. Also, I wouldn't want the bother of carrying it around. I will have iced tea.:)
Familyforce6 Posted March 28, 2009 #29 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I agree. Would you go to a nice restaurant and bring your own can of soda? I have done this before. Fountain coke makes me gag.
rhorhorho Posted March 28, 2009 #30 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I can't believe how many people think it would be tacky. As for those who claim they have never seen it, did you look for this? I am always amazed by how much time is spent here talking about other peoples behavior, not each others but people we "saw". I can't tell you squat about what people wear, say, think, do, don't do other than my own family and those I cruise with or meet and get to know on a cruise. I am there because it is how I chose to relax, not to profile the passanger clientel. That being said...I have seen people bring cans of soda into the dinning room, I noticed because it was a cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper and I wanted one. The gentelman was seated in my line of sight and it caught my eye. Bring it, I don't really think anyone will even notice.
FantasyLineAddict Posted March 28, 2009 #31 Share Posted March 28, 2009 People bring drinks to the dining room all the time and they also leave with them. If I haven't noticed someone bringing a can of soda in, then it's because I wasn't concerned with what other people were drinking. I've certainly seen cans of beer and if people were refilling a glass with their beer or drinking out of the can or bottle, it was their preference. I've never had any trouble getting a soda with my soda card in the dining room either. It's been one of the easiest places to get a soda quickly and often the bar waiter remembers each night and brings one as soon as s/he sees you. ooulio Posted March 28, 2009 #32 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I have been on a dozen cruises myself. I have never seen anyone carry a can into the dining rom. It is very tacky. I brought a 8 pack of pepsi from Ft lauderdale last month. I bought a soda card too. I saved my pepsi for in the room. I dont like coke but drank it for the week. Buy a soda card. They have all kinds of coke brands. I am just a Pepsi drinker. I even bought a Carnival mug. I dont carry it into the dining room.
holdon216 Posted March 28, 2009 Author #33 Share Posted March 28, 2009 What a HOT TOPIC i created!!! I love to ask questions on here because i always get good answers. And a good LAUGH!!! Such touchy people on here. RELAX it's a vacation. Thanks for the comments. I think we will buy a 12 pack of regular soda for the kid, and caffeine free for me. I DOUBT very much that Carnival carries caffeine free. And i AM NOT CHEAP :D
akwaaba Posted March 28, 2009 #34 Share Posted March 28, 2009 If we bring case of soda for the 12 year old would it be EXTREMELY tacky to allow him to bring a can or two into the dining room??? Would certainly be the cheaper route to go. What do you think?? Have you seen others do this??THANKS!!! I don't see anything wrong with it; Carnival allows you to bring a reasonable amount of soda and water on board so I'm sure they expect you to drink it. If it was prohibited that would be different. picklebongo Posted March 28, 2009 #35 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I dont think its tacky but I would be sure to tip a few dollars extra to the person who had the cup of ice ready for him each evening. Why in the world would bringing a cup of ice make for an additional tip?
Happy0810 Posted March 28, 2009 #36 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I've taken a drink into the dining room on a number of occasions, but it's only because they don't serve Dr. Pepper on the ship. I'm a DP or water drinker (not a wine drinker or beer drinker) and after a day of drinking water at the beach/shore excursions, sometimes I'm just ready for something different and Dr. Pepper works wonders for me. :D I try not to be too judgemental on what others do because I can guarentee that I don't normally know the whole story or the reasons why so who am I to judge or care. ;)
mimisandy Posted March 28, 2009 #37 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Strictly my opinion but the reason they have been able to keep the basic cost of cruising down is because they make a lot of money selling the extras. Let's not kid ourselves, building, maintaining and running these ships is expensive. You can have your own alcoholic drinks in your cabin, but they ask you to confine it to your cabin. I think the same applies to cokes. These bar waiters (where even a coke comes from) rely on their gratuities. Spring for the coke card.

You know on my Spirit cruise last month I saw a girl in a swim coverup and flip flops in the dining room, I think bringing a can of pop for a kid is less tacky than a swim cover up in the dining room. I myself would either order the chocolate milk or pour the soda into a glass from the bar or in the room and carry it in, but different strokes. Seems almost like anything goes in the dining rooms anymore:cool::rolleyes:
swscruiser Posted March 28, 2009 #39 Share Posted March 28, 2009 My Opinion? Yes, it would be tacky. Do you do this when you go out for dinner at home? I remember my Pops used to own a garage back in the day. People would bring in their own motor oil and filter and ask him to change the oil in their car. He'd look at them and ask " Do you bring your own bacon and eggs to the restraunt and ask the cook to fry them up for you?" I remember one time when I was a kid, we ordered take out from a small family run restaurant. when my Dad picked it up and brought it home there were 2 cans of vegtables in the sacks with a note that said they had run out of veggies so the just put the 2 cans in the bag. Mom immediately called and told them "If I wanted to cook dinner myself I wouldn't have ordered dinner from you in the first place!!!" They apologized and told her next time dinner was on them. I think you should spring for the coke card only if you drink 5 or 6 cokes a day, that is how the price works out to. I don't think many parents let their kids drink that much soda. I don't see anything wrong with bringing your soda on the ship if you feel like carrying it. The cruise line is NOT going to go broke if people don't buy the cards. Now people getting compensation for breaking a nail on the railing or some other such stupid claims from people. That frivolous lawsuits thing, that will make a dent in their pockets. The casino and bar, and of course people that can't resist shopping (like me) end up spending a good amount on the S and S cards. I bring my own case of bottled water, and smuggle a bottle of baileys for my morning coffee, I always manage to spend a good 2G while on the ship, from shopping and DOD's and such. And the room I have from the water and baileys in my suitcase at the end allow me to pack all those things I buy on the ship!!! Extras happen!!!;) Cheers, Carole
marilole Posted March 28, 2009 #41 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I always bring a can with me - gives me a container to spit my tobacky juice.:D ewwwww!!!! Ive seen people spitting in soda cans and bottles and just makes me nauseous.. nasty, nasty, NASTY!.. that is tackier than bringing a soda can to the dinning room.. which by the way, I dont think is tacky.. you can bring it in your purse and discretely take it out. Bringing your own alcohol on board is against Carnival's policy. One bottle of wine per person is all that is allowed. Nowhere is it even hinted that the wine should be consumed in one's cabin. It is subject to a $10 corkage fee if brought to the dining room. But many land restaurants also charge a corkage fee if a patron brings their own wine. If a kid comes into the DR carrying a can of Coke, is it tacky if it was brought on board in the beginning, but not tacky if it was purchased at a bar on board? 2 rednecks Posted March 28, 2009 #43 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I have seen people carry buckets of beer into a dining room, I have seen couples walk in 30 min late every night of a cruise i have seen drunks tell there servers to come to their cabin for good tip. and there are people complaining about bringing a can of soda, for a child no less. i would much rather see someone carry in a can of soda, then many other things. Then again i watch other people get a good laugh out of some and don't let much of anything effect the fun i am having. I even think there are people who if they could, would walk around the ship rolling a keg if they could get away with it.

lovesublime Posted March 28, 2009 #45 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Why in the world would bringing a cup of ice make for an additional tip? I was thinking the same thing. The waiter is going to bring the kid something to drink anyway, even if it's just water. Extra tipping for a glass of ice? I don't get it.
caribsun Posted March 28, 2009 #46 Share Posted March 28, 2009 If it keeps the rugrat quiet during dinner let him/her have a can of soda. :) What I find interesting, are adults that only drink a certain brand of soda/beer or anything. mudpievelour Posted March 28, 2009 #47 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Yes, I used to work with a girl that took her own soda to a restaurant. She said she wasn't about to pay $1.50 for a soda in a glass when she could get a can of soda for 50 cents from our machine. She would walk in, set her can on the table, and ask the waitress for a glass of ice. The waitress brought it and never said a word. Of course, we always tipped her well afterward. Thirsty Cruiser Posted March 28, 2009 #48 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Only allowed if you bring it inside your Bubba Keg. My bubba keg is filled with something a little stronger than soda. The kids know better'n to touch it.;) ...I even think there are people who if they could, would walk around the ship rolling a keg if they could get away with it. You mean you can't get away with it? I don't know what the fuss is. I thought a soda was a buck fifty??? That is only $10.50 plus tip for a 7 day cruise. Let the kids feel cool and spring for a soda. They gave my kids free shirley temple setups with their orders.
