Casino during Alaska cruise?

Superduty

Recommended Posts

I recall an esteemed Cruise Critic poster explaining that the casinos are allowed to operate in Alaskan coastal waters in return for the state collecting a tax on the casino revenue.

Please, someone correct me if my memory has failed.

they would open about 45 mins after leaving port and close about an hour before the next port. during glacier bay, it's closed until about 45 mins after you clear the park/bay. closes a couple of hours before you dock in vancouver...for good. doesn't open again. you have to have all your "points" turned in by the dead line or forget it.

we were just leaving port and people were, already, saving their machines :D

OP..believe me.. they are open enough to loose all you want to loose and then some.. LOL...

NJH you are correct that they can open in Alaskan waters and they do pay a hefty "tax" or assessment to Alaska for doing so. I think it is like 50% of their profits or something like that.

unrelated, but since we're on the pearl to alaska, wondering if anyone knows how smokey the casino is....I think DH would love to play, but allergies keep us away from smokey places

I smoke and found it to be smokeyon the Dawn I have not been on the pearl yet. But they do have tables outside by the pool on the Dawn. On the Gem I think they had an automated roulette table in Bliss ultra lounge not sure on this, maybe someone else knows for sure.

On the STAR, they had blackjack in the pool on the open deck so 2nd. hand smoke is less of a problem. And, hard sell on "Bingo" every day - a couple spend over $1,000 playing multiple hand-held devices along with those instant win "crack it" or whatever nightly at the showroom.

Oh, the other thing we've noticed is that signs posted inside casino that certain winnings are subject to IRS reporting & tax withholding, so in case someone win big, Uncle Sam will be counting on your share of tax support ....
