acruisergirl Posted April 17, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2009 Has anyone been to Nafplion, Greece? We will be there in Sept. and would like some suggestion of what to do there. We are sailing in 2 weeks on Azamara and we'll be stopping in Nafplion. The ship excursions highlight Epidavros, Palamidi Fortress and ancient Mycenae. I looked into private tours but very expensive with only 4 passengers.
Rare steamboats Posted April 17, 2009 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2009 I´ve been to Nafplion on land vacations on serveral occasions. It´s a nice little city. The main attraction is the Palmidi Fortress (lots of steps, lots of walking - I just read it´s 999 steps but you can take a taxi). The second fortress is called Akronauplia and a third one is called Bourtzi and this one is located in the sea on a tiny island. Nafplion has a military museum, an archeological museum and a local museum. There are also public busses to the ancient amphitheatre of Epidavros (Epidauros). Mykene is another option which is close by. You can even go to Olympia on a day tour or to Korinth (see the Canal and the excarvations there). I´m sorry I can´t give you any detailed information about public transportation as we usually had our own / rental car with us. But here´s a bus schedule http://www.ktel-argolis.gr/en/table.asp Here´s a website covering the Epidavros region http://www.ancientepidavros.com/english/default.htm There are a couple of villages called Epidavros (Nea = New, Palea = Old/Ancient, Archea = historic). So make sure you´re going to the correct one. Also check this website for Nafplion: http://www.greecetravel.com/nafplio/tour.htm Also make a search for Mykene and the famous Lion Gate. steamboats

Rare TLCOhio Posted February 10, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 10, 2010 Has anyone been to Nafplion, Greece? We will be there in Sept. and would like some suggestion of what to do there. Nafplion was Greece's capital in the 1800's as Athens had faded in size and importance under Turkish rule. Below are some visual sampling for your options. The main town has nice outdoor dining places overlooking the harbor. Nearby are varied options to reach by tour. THANKS! Enjoy!
