Santa Monica or Long Beach Hotel recommendations please

We will be staying in LA pre cruise in April 2010. We will probably stay in either Santa Monica (we have been there before), or Long Beach where we have not been previously. Any recommendations for nice hotels in these areas would be appreciated. They don't have to be top of the line, but must be clean and comfortable. Thanks.
