green.herbs Posted May 11, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2009 I have been reading reports that a Las Vegas entertainment company wants to buy the Queen Mary and restore her for transatlantic travel. Ridiculous in my opinion but we will see what happens . http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/search/4339359.Plans_to_return_Queen_Mary_to_the_seas/ http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-queen-mary30-2009apr30,0,4348400.story http://www.nbclosangeles.com/around_town/the_scene/The-Queen-May-Sale-Again.html http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/a-clockwork-orange/ho-hum-another-young-oc-bizman/
Atomica Posted May 11, 2009 #2 Share Posted May 11, 2009 I hope they have fun with that one. Probably would cost less money to build a brand-new QM replica ship and sail that, considering that most of the former crew and machinery spaces were totally demolished to make way for conference rooms, etc.
CHIEB2812 Posted May 11, 2009 #3 Share Posted May 11, 2009 We just got off the QM, took the self guided tour. They would need to do a lot of work!
kimchee1212 Posted May 11, 2009 #4 Share Posted May 11, 2009 Not a good idea.. My family and I visited her last Sunday and it was a mess. It would need A LOT of work.

RickEk Posted May 11, 2009 #8 Share Posted May 11, 2009 Two words.... crack pot :D:p:rolleyes: (And yeah, I know crackpot is one word, but I was thinking this dude was smoking crack, then pot and then thinking... "hey dude!, let's pour billions of dollars into making the Queen Mary a real ship again!"...) As someone else has said, it'd be cheaper to build a new one. Nancyquilts Posted May 11, 2009 #9 Share Posted May 11, 2009 I don't gamble, as a rule - no casino, not even bingo. But I'd sure make a bet that that never happens. Nancy
Vic The Parrot Posted May 11, 2009 #10 Share Posted May 11, 2009 They'd have a better chance of putting the United States out to sea again. The "Big U" is still seaworthy, and still considered a 'ship' ... whereas QM is classified as a building. A thoughtful idea, but it'll never happen. I'd rather see Mary in her current spot. The damage has been done, so it's best to leave her be. :(
skf Posted May 11, 2009 #11 Share Posted May 11, 2009 The QM was launched in 1936, & is about 73 years old. My father-in-law sailed to England in 1944 on her. I think he will come back to life before she does. Steve
gatour Posted May 11, 2009 #12 Share Posted May 11, 2009 She is majorly silted in, so along with the issues you can add that one. "building" is a great description for her.
