Buying liquor at Duty Free shop on Valor?

The question is if Carnival doesn't want you to bring your own liquor on board, then why do they sell it at the Duty Free shops on the ships? Or maybe the question should be, if you buy the liquor at the Duty Free shops, can you open it and use it on the ship?

Anything you buy on board from the liquor store will be held until the last night. We always bring some of our own and pack it in our checked luggage to enjoy in the cabin. It's not allowed but everyone does it.

 

They sell it on board because you can get some great deals and don't have to pay the taxes and duty on them. You are only allowed so many bottles depending on where you are going to visit (St. Thomas you can bring back 5 liters each as long as at least one is made there - Cruzan Rum, easy). We have bought as many as 17 bottles and just paid the duty tax which for the overage it came to $10.00! The prices on board are fantastic and it's a great savings that they pass along to all of us.

 

If they allowed everyone to purchase liquor to consume on board do you know what that would do to their revenue from the bars? We do bring some of our own, but also buy several more from the bars so they really don't lose any money from us.

On RCL if we bought after 1 pm the last sea day we got to bring it back to our cabins this last time :D

Im assuming you mean the last full day of the cruise, if so Carnival allows the same, without the 1pm restriction.

Last seaday only. Also any liquor purchased in the ports is held until the last seaday.

 

The only embarkation port with liquor restriction is Texas. You are allowed one liter if you are a resident and 3.75 liters if you are a non-resident. All other ports you can bring back an unlimited amount.

 

You are allowed 1 ltr duty-free for each person in your party that is over 21 yrs old. Any thing over this amount, it is up to the Custom's Offficer if a duty is to be paid. Most places allow about 4-6 liters in before you have to pay up. In New Orleans and Mobile, it is $2.85 a liter over the Federal limit.

Thanks for the heads up. I collect rums and was planning to purchase some bottles for my collection. I guess i will have to bring extra cash for customs ;<

If you want a bottle of hootch to drink in your room,(aside from smuggling), call the Bon Voyage Dept. at CCL and it will be in your cabin waiting for you! Mind you, it costs about twice as much you would pay in a liquor store, but the conveniance is worth it, to me, anyway.:rolleyes:

One other thing I noticed this past trip on the Fantasy sailing 5/9. When we reboarded the ship in Nassau they took our boxed 4 bottles to hold for the last night. However, the smaller sized bottles I had in my purse passed through the scanner without difficulty ;):D Can't say that will work on all cruises at all times, but it certainly worked that trip :)
